During the golden age of LP, Horst Stein was among a select band of central-European conductors (Vaclav Neumann and Otmar Suitner another two notable examples) revered by Japanese orchestras and audiences, perhaps more than their Western counterparts. They had an uncomplicated mastery of the repertoire that shunned interpretative eccentricity and plugged listeners in to a strong current of cultivated orchestral sonority which seemed to grow from and continue a Kapellmeister lineage that built the great orchestras of the world in the first place.

As chief conductor of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Stein made recordings of Sibelius that have been prized since their first issue, and have been collected together on another Eloquence release (4823922). The present release returns to Stein’s heartland of German Romanticism. Indeed the progression from Weber to Wagner to Wolf traces the eventful development of the Romantic movement in music over 80 years, from the daring, post-Schubertian harmonies of Weber’s Symphony (no less touched by lyric genius than his music for the stage) to the tumultuous and multi-climactic tone-poem that is Wolf’s Penthesilea, which tells the story of an Amazon queen’s gruesome revenge for thwarted passion.

“Stein’s persuasive performance makes no apologies for the work … an important rediscovery.” Gramophone Magazine, February 1982 (Wolf: Penthesilea)

“Especially for the superb playing Stein gets from the VPO … this is much to be recommended.” Gramophone Magazine, July 1974 (Wagner)

“Stein’s gifts as a Wagner conductor have enabled him to see the richness and depth already glimpsed […] in the remarkable Andante.” Gramophone Magazine, September 1978 (Weber: Symphony)

Wagner:

Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg: Overture

Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra

‘Zubin Mehta: The Decca Years’ has celebrated Mehta’s wide-ranging Decca recordings. Re-released by popular demand is Mehta’s recording of Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony, the ‘Romantic’ (in the Nowak edition of 1878–80) with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, coupled with an early Vienna Philharmonic recording of the Prelude to the first act of Wagner’s Meistersinger.

“The Decca engineers have now certainly got the measure of Royce Hall, Los Angeles, with rich reverberation wrapping round the bald Brucknerian textures […] I have never before known this music sound so like Wagner. […] In all four movements Mehta with his suave style is a degree more extrovert [than the versions by Kertesz and Haitink]” Gramophone Magazine, April 1971 (Bruckner)

Klemperer’s mastery of Wagner’s music was rooted in the early years of his career: by the age of 30 he had conducted performances of Lohengrin, Der fliegende Holländer, Tannhäuser, Der Ring des Nibelungen, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Parsifal and Tristan und Isolde.

Tristan und Isolde: Prelude & Liebestod

Prelude (transc. Kocsis); lsoldes Liebestod (transc. Liszt)

Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg: Overture

Festive March (transc. Liszt)

Excerpts from Wagner operas have, on countless occasions, been transcribed for piano. A fairly long list of transcribers could be made, starting with Joseph Rubinstein, the first transcriber of an extract from Parsifal, going on through Bülow to Brassin, then from Carl Tausig to August Stradal, to speak only of those who were pupils of Liszt. It is an established fact that Liszt, the greatest master of transcription and paraphrase, made very little use of Wagner’s works. In this highly-regarded recording, once more appearing on CD, the transcription honours are shared between Liszt and Kocsis.

“He graduates the ascent to the Prelude’s climax beautifully, however, while still leaving something in reserve for the climax of Liebestod. In the latter Kocsis demonstrates enviable control of the demisemiquaver tremolos and responds well to the rapid ebb and flow of the music’s emotions. … Kocsis’s performance [of the “Feierlicher Marsch” from Parsifal] is excellent. The digital recording is at once lifelike and unobtrusive.” Gramophone Magazine

Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg: Overture

National Youth Orchestra of Spain & Joven Orquesta Nacional de España (JONDE), José Serebrier

Filmed in Chester Cathedral during the National Youth Orchestra of Spain’s 2007 European tour, this concert features Leopold Stokowski’s inimitable and colourful transcriptions of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and A Night on Bare Mountain, the latter made famous by its inclusion in the 1940 Walt Disney film Fantasia.

“José Serebrier has already recorded the two main works here in CD format, but it's interesting to check the extra sense of edger and immediacy given by this live concert in Chester Cathedral and, in the case of the Musorgsky Pictures, to watch first-hand what Stokowski is doing with the instrumentation.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2009 ****
