Rachmaninov: Symphony No. 3 & Symphonic Dances

Rachmaninov:

Symphonic Dances, Op. 45

Symphony No. 3 in A minor, Op. 44

Completed in 1936, two years after the hugely popular Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Rachmaninov’s Third Symphony was considered by the composer to be one of his finest works. Both this and the Symphonic Dances, his last work, offer a summation of his late style in blending intense rhythmic energy with rich romanticism. Leonard Slatkin and the DSO’s recording of the Second Symphony (8572458) was hailed by BBC Music Magazine as “a performance warmed by musicians who clearly love this symphony”.

The Third Symphony and the Symphonic Dances are late Rachmaninov and go together very well. Both illustrate Rachmaninov taking new directions in his compositions, sparer in the Symphony and rhythmically charged in the Dances.

“Slatkin can certainly manage the freedom of Rachmaninov's frequent marking tempo rubato...On the minus side, the notoriously hard-to-co-ordinate finale of the Third feels unhelpfully lumpy...Not a bad bargain” BBC Music Magazine, May 2013 ***

Rachmaninov: Symphony No. 3 & Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini

Rachmaninov:

Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43

Yevgeny Sudbin (piano)

Symphony No. 3 in A minor, Op. 44

BIS present two works composed by Sergei Rachmaninov, featuring virtuoso pianist Yevgeny Sudbin alongside the Singapore Symphony Orchestra under Lan Shui.

Rachmaninov composed Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini after a seven-year silence, and consists of 24 variations taken from Paganini’s 24th Caprice for solo violin.

The Rhapsody was soon followed by his Third Symphony. Its themes have a marked Russian character used with great subtlety.

Lan Shui and his Singapore Symphony Orchestra here follow their acclaimed 2008 recording of Rachmaninov’s Symphony No.2 (BISSACD1712).

The discography of Yevgeny Sudbin includes a Rachmaninov solo recital (BISSACD1518), and a recording of the Fourth Piano Concerto (BISSACD1728).

“Sudbin’s playing has terrific presence in this recording of Rachmaninov’s Paganini Rhapsody. The blend of personality and stylistic perception that marks Sudbin’s live performances is also manifest here. He plays with passion, drive, dexterity, discretion and dynamism...This is a top-flight, richly enjoyable performance” The Telegraph, 5th April 2012 ****

“This, as you would expect from Subdin, is a performance rich in detail and immaculately executed; furthermore, from the outset the ear is immediately taken by the superb sound quality” Gramophone Magazine, May 2012

“Subdin, clearly on top form, treats Rachmaninov's variations like a set of diabolical virtuoso etudes, displaying transcendental virtuosity and kaleidoscopic keyboard colour. Sudbin nevertheless plays with all the necessary intimacy and sense of Romantic feeling in the lyrical sections...The Singapore Symphony accompanies perfectly, adding considerably to the colour and atmosphere of the work.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2012 ***/****

Caprice Bohémien, Op. 12

Vocalise, Op. 34 No. 14 - arrangement for orchestra

Symphony No. 3 in A minor, Op. 44

Award-winning conductor Vasily Petrenko’s exceptional abilities as a renowned, inspiring conductor with major media appeal set him apart from the majority of his contemporaries. He is the youngest ever Principal (now Chief) Conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and will add the role of Chief Conductor of the Oslo Philharmonic beginning with the 2013/2014 season. His commitment to musical education has led him to act as Principal Conductor or the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and to be a founding member of the board of the UK’s "Building on Excellence: Orchestras for the 21st Century” scheme, which endeavours to increase the participation in classical and cultural events amongst British youth.

Vasily Petrenko conducts the RLPO for Rachmaninov’s third and most expressive symphony, paired with his capriccio on gypsy themes, the Caprice Bohémien.

This will be the first of a run of exciting releases focusing on the Russian music of Petrenko’s heritage.

Since Petrenko took up the baton of the RLPO’s Principal Conductor in 2006 (and then Chief Conductor in 2009), this partnership has flourished; and the orchestra is now described as “premier league”. Vasily has now committed to staying with the orchestra until 2015.

“In the Third Symphony, which finds Rachmaninov wistfully recalling the Russia he left after the October Revolution, Petrenko and the RLPO also identify the zest, the orchestral lucidity and the rhythmic thrust that marked the composer’s later years. An exhilarating performance.” The Telegraph, 5th January 2012 *****

“Perhaps the most impressive feature of this new recording is the quicksilver dynamic fluidity of the orchestra - they are able to move from the boldest of fortissimos to the most tender of pianissimos in a heartbeat. There is an overwhelming sense that the musicians are moving as one with the same telepathic unity of a murmuring of starlings. It is mesmerising....This music - and these recordings - will last for a very long time.” Classic FM Magazine, February 2012

“The RLPO strings sound leaner, perhaps, than those of Stokowski’s Philadelphia Orchestra, which inspired the composer, but they have never seemed more sumptuous than in the long melodies of the central adagio, and their brilliant articulation of virtuoso allegro passages at Petrenko’s fast tempi brings exhilarating dividends. In this magnificently played account, the stature of the music is never in doubt.” Sunday Times, 15th January 2012

“The RLPO play magnificently...There is surging energy here allied to lucidity of orchestration and rhythmic impetus, together with that infallible sense of instrumental timbre that Rachmaninov possessed. The lyrical elements...are conveyed with heartfelt affection without resorting to any heart-on-sleeve excess.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2012

Rachmaninov: Symphonies Nos. 1-3 (complete)

Rachmaninov: Symphonies Nos. 1-3 (complete)

“Ashkenazy has made few more distinguished discs as conductor than his Rachmaninov symphony recordings of the early 1980s. The downside of the repackaging in this 2CD format is that you have to put up with a change of disc half-way through the Second Symphony and lose the shorter orchestral works included in the Previn set. Previn is the most natural but not always the most electrifying of Rachmaninov interpreters and many will find Ashkenazy preferable, particularly in No 1. Although some of Ashkenazy's speeds seem unnaturally pressed – he fairly tips us into the first movement reprise having declined to cap the climax with unvalidated bells – the excitement is infectious. Previn's LSO isn't at its best in the Larghetto, but in the corresponding movement of the Second Symphony the boot is on the other foot. Not that Ashkenazy isn't convincing too – so long as you can forget the Previn. Ashkenazy's volatile approach is at its most extreme in the Third, the mood much less autumnal than it usually is, with the fruity Concertgebouw brass unconstrained.
Such an unashamedly episodic rendering of the score has its drawbacks, but the virtuosic energy and Romantic gush are hard to resist. The recordings sound very well indeed.”

Rachmaninov: Symphonies Nos. 1-3 (complete)

Although they have been intermittently available, Walter Weller's cycle of the three Rachmaninov Symphonies have hidden their blazing light under the Decca bushel for far too long. Recorded in absolutely thrilling Decca sound with L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande (No. 1) and the London Philharmonic Orchestra (Nos. 2 and 3), these three masterpieces are now collectively issued on Australian Eloquence.

Weller's view is at once trenchant and expansive. He is able to extract the last ounce of emotion from such symphonic-scapes as the slow movement of the Second - taken at a seemingly dangerously slow tempo, but which, with his unerring shaping of that popular movement, seems just right.

Grippingly emotional, these readings will now take their rightful place in recording history with such other great stereo recordings as those by Eugene Ormandy and Vladimir Ashkenazy.
