Riley's pieces are milestones of minimal music and the pianist, Fabrizio Ottaviucci, is bound by a long-time friendship with the composer, having played several times with Riley who has supervised (and corrected some features of) this recording.

“There's a jazzy feel to the basic riffs [in Tread on the Trail] while some of the metrical complexities that the layerings produce recall Nancarrow's player-piano pieces, especially as Ottaviucci uses multi-tracking to combine the sounds of several pianos.
