Praetorius, M: Wachet auf ruft uns die Stimme

From Michael Praetorius‘ extensive works we hear the same pieces again and again during the Christmas season, such as 'Es ist ein Ros’ entsprungen' (A great and mighty wonder). Thus well-composed, but simple compositions have become well-known to a larger audience.

The aim of this recording is to emphasise the whole range of his art of arrangement, the choice being limited to five groups of hymns and two additional concertos: from simple four-part harmony to the complex contrapuntal chorale motet right up to the multi-choral vocal concert with solo voices, choir, instruments and figured bass.

In the early 17th Century the ’Guard of the Battlement’ was not only the watchman but more like the Town Piper as he had to communicate with his fellow guardians by acoustic signals. Town councils soon realized that these talents could be used for prestige purposes. This boosted the reputation of the town pipers along with prominent musicians of the day such as Praetorius and Scheidt. This recording demonstrates the spectacular sound effects and expertise of these fine musicians. Capella de la Torre on period instruments bring to life this exciting music.
