Orchestre de Chambre de la Sarre, Karl Ristenpart

French master autist Jean-Pierre Rampal had a formative influence on the development and importance of classical flute playing during the 20th century – and his exemplary career helped the instrument gain a degree of popularity that prompted one of Washington Post‘s reviewers to pose the question: “Can any other autist since Frederick the Great boast as many fans as Jean-Pierre Rampal?” Through Rampal‘s international career as a virtuoso - and his work as a conductor - the musician made a crucial contribution to the flute being accepted as a solo instrument on the international concert scene. These recordings, made in 1954 and 1955, prove the flute virtuoso to be not only a lover of Mozart‘s music but also a connoisseur of his art.

Andante in C major, K315 for flute and orchestra

Rondo in D major, K184 Anh. for flute and orchestra

Wendling:

Flute Concerto in C major

Bernhard Krabatsch (flute)

Mozarteumorchester Salzburg, Ivor Bolton

It was Wendling who enabled Mozart to reach a new understanding of the flute’s possibilities and potential. Krabach plays these works on a wooden transverse flute which has a modern key mechanism. He is able to produce a darker, mellower sound without compromising on intonation and precision.

“Ivor Bolton offers Krabatsch sympathetic support. Orchestral lines are skilfully balanced and playing standards are excellent...Commendably, [Krabatsch] shapes the phrases and brings some tension to the passagework.” Gramophone Magazine, July 2010

Andante in C major, K315 for flute and orchestra

The Places

The tour starts in Northern Italy, in Ravenna, once the capital of the Roman Emperor Honorius. The tour also takes us to Faenza, famous for its majolica ware, known as faïence, and to the great Basilica of San Marco in Venice and its Carnival.

The Music

The music for this tour of Italy is by Mozart and includes his two Flute Concertos, written for a patron during a visit to Mannheim in 1777–78. The Andante, K.315, is thought to date from the same period.
