Celebrated pianist Håkon Austbø has received many international awards for his work in the area of contemporary music. ‘Wanted’ is his second solo recording for Aurora, and features major works by three great musical figures of the latter half of the 20th and start of the 21st centuries, Pierre Boulez, Elliott Carter, and Asbjørn Schaathun. The third Piano Sonata represents a key moment in the development of Pierre Boulez’ music. In this piece which dates back to 1957, the composer for the first time takes fully on board the ideas of John Cage about principles of chance in music. Night Fantasies was also a turning point in Elliott Carter’s work. In this single movement piece Carter builds up the musical journey with contrasting episodes, whilst he himself makes the choice of route through the labyrinth. Asbjørn Schaathun’s “Physis” was crucial in the establishment of his musical style as he started to combine the stochastic approach of Xenakis with the serial procedures of Stockhausen. The seven “Areas” in the piece provide a fixed framework, each area consisting of a larger section, played without electronics, followed by smaller ones using electronics. The smaller sections are always interchangeable, with the performer choosing the order. Norwegian pianist Håkon Austbø is internationally known for his work in contemporary music. Having lived and worked out of the Netherlands for more than 30 years, Austbø has recently returned to his home country. His numerous recordings, among them the complete piano works of Messiaen, have received many awards. His previous recording for Aurora featured the music of Valen, Egge, Mortenssen, and Wallin (ACD5060). “Austbo makes [Carter's] admittedly tough piece seem lucid and often thrilling. One feels the different speeds clashing in an immediately physical way. Boulez's Third Sonata is a veritable compendium of subtle pedal effects, which Austbo reveals with fascinating clarity.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2012 *** | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

“It sometimes seems as if Boulez has spent a lifetime paying the penalty for having found composition so easy as a young man. The first two piano sonatas, works of his early twenties, are formidably assured in technique and tremendously rich in ideas. Those sections of the Third Sonata released for performance sound cold and tentative by comparison. Or is it that the Third Sonata's much more extreme rejection of tradition is itself a triumph, an authentic modernity that stands out the more prominently for its individualism? Such thoughts are inspired by Idil Biret's absorbing disc. In the first movement of the First Sonata the broader picture proves to be well fleshed out, the argument kept on the move, the young composer's impatience and arrogance palpable in Biret's steely touch and the rather dry but never harsh recorded sound. The Second Sonata is no less confidently played. Its power suggests why such experiments as No 3 represents could never be a last word for Boulez. This disc isn't the first to bring us the three sonatas together, but Biret's musical persuasiveness, and the up-to-date sound, earn it a strong recommendation.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 “Biret's musical persuasiveness, and the up-to-date sound, earn this Naxos issue a strong recommendation.” Gramophone Magazine | | | (also available to download from $5.75) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days.
