William Saunders & Peter Crompton (The Grand Organ of The Royal Hospital School, Holbrook)

Released as part of celebrations of the 300th anniversary of founding of the Royal Hospital School, Holbrook, this recording brings alive the many colours of this splendid organ.

One of the finest remaining examples of the work of British organ builders Hill, Norman and Beard from the 1930s, set in a glorious seven-second acoustic.

A selection of rich twentieth-century English music by Whitlock, Mathias and Francis Jackson balanced by typically French impressionism and virtuosity from Mulet, Vierne, Bonnet, Jongen and Lanquetuit.

The English repertoire is played by William Saunders in his fourth recording for Regent, and the French works are played by Peter Crompton, Director of Music at the Royal Hospital School and award-winning organist.

John Scott (organ)

“Considering the unique and important place Mathias's music holds in the organ's repertory it's nothing short of scandalous that so little of it is currently available on disc. Hopefully his untimely death last year will prick the consciences of record companies and it's appropriate that a Welsh label has been first to act and nobody could complain about the playing time of this CD (78 mins). Scott is as fine a champion of Mathias's music as any... making it seem so fresh and instinctive... performances which are both authoritative and hugely enjoyable. A fitting tribute to a composer who has a special place in the hearts and minds of organists” Gramophone Magazine
