This is the 21st album by this orchestra on Pentatone, most of which have received the highest critical acclaim. In particular, the recordings of Russian repertoire conducted by Russian conductors are artistically and commercially successful. “...richly played and caught with a vividness arresting even for SACD...Pletnev gives [the Mlada excerpt] immense scale” BBC Music Magazine, July 2010 ***** “Pletnev and his virtuoso orchestra make a charming sound picture of the Dance of the Birds, woodwind all a-twitter, and leap with plenty of vigour into the single most popular item, the Dance of the Clowns, or Skomorokhi...the death and transfiguration of the Princess Fevronia...is evocatively played.” Gramophone Magazine, August 2010 | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. | | | Rimsky Korsakov - Overture and Suites from the Operas
“Neeme Jarvi draws the most seductive response from the SNO; he consistently creates orchestral textures which are diaphanously sinuous. Yet the robust moments…are caught just as strikingly and the listener is assured that here is music which survives repetition uncommonly well.”(Penguin Complete Guide) | | | (also available to download from $21.25) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. “This disc offers some rarely heard Rimsky-Korsakov overtures and opera suites (actually, this Maid of Pskov suite stems from incidental music composed for a play of the same name, and not from the opera). ...the composer's remarkable penchant for vividly coloristic orchestration is always on display, especially in the exotic imagery of The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and in the early Fantasia on Serbian Themes. ...Igor Golovchin and the Moscow Symphony Orchestra play the music with a wonderfully home-grown authenticity you won't find anywhere in the West. If you're interested in this music, this is how you should hear it.” Classics Today | | | (also available to download from $6.00) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. | | | Evgeny Mravinsky conducts Russian composers
Famed for his colossal stature and rigorous rehearsal methods, Evgeny Mravinsky is generally considered to be the greatest of all Soviet conductors. The maestro was appointed chief of the elite Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra in 1938 – a post lasting 50 years and which gave rise to a truly remarkable partnership, as evident in this three-disc set. Beginning with a whistle-stop tour of Tchaikovsky’s best-known orchestral works, the compilation embarks on a series of monumental readings – striking for their cleansing of tempo and refusal to hyperdramatise. Mravinsky’s interpretation of this composer’s music was a revelation to Western ears at the time, and the combination of energy and precision that he dedicates to compositions such as the Nutcracker Suite and Symphony No.5 is to be found across the entire collection. From Rimsky-Korsakov’s dazzling Tale of the Invisible City of Kitezh Suite to Glinka’s brilliant Ruslan and Ludmilla overture, the set brims with atmospheric performances taken from live recordings spanning nearly two decades. It’s easy to hear why the Leningrad Philharmonic became known as the ‘best orchestra in Russia’ under Mravinsky’s command. Full of wonderfully sonorous playing, this release represents a small chapter of history in detailing one of music’s most fascinating relationships. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
