| | | Szymanowski - Stabat Mater
Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, Antoni Wit Karol Szymanowski’s Stabat Mater, set to a Polish translation of the medieval poem, makes extensive use of traditional Polish musical ideas. His setting of the Veni Creator was composed for the opening of the Warsaw Academy of Music, of which he was the first rector. The Litany for the Virgin Mary is a more meditative work, yet rises at times to a level of rhapsodic intensity. All the choral works on this recording are as firmly embedded in Christian musical tradition as they are recognisably of their period. “Antoni Wit and his players undoubtedly have the measure of this music, but it is the singing of the soprano Iwona Hossa that lends this disc its special distinction… superb value.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2008 ***** |

City of Birmingham Symphony Chorus & Orchestra, Sir Simon Rattle The music of the great Polish composer Karol Szymanowski (1882-1937) has, until recently, been relatively neglected. Sir Simon Rattle's recordings, gathered together here for the first time, brought it before a new and receptive audience.
This 4-CD set contains all the Szymanowski recordings that Sir Simon has made for EMI Classics. The collection contains some of the composer's best-known works: the two Violin Concertos, The Song of the Night, the beautiful Stabat Mater and the exquisite Love Songs of Hafiz. The set also contains Rattle's complete recording of the opera King Roger. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
