For its first recording on Zig-Zag Territories, the George Sand Trio, composed of Virginie Buscail, Nadine Pierre and Anne-Lise Gastaldi, offers a refined interpretation of trios by Ravel, Mel Bonis, and Fauré. It is astonishing to realize the gulf that divides the two greatest trios in French music: while Ravel’s sparkles with a quasi-orchestral profusion and presents unexpected formal devices, that of his master Fauré (composed later) unassertively imposes a timeless, poignant austerity. These masterpieces, which gain much from being placed side by side, are here complemented by a diptych for trio by their contemporary Mel Bonis, a woman composer whose output, despite its high quality, is still too seldom heard. | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Mel Bonis - Piano Quartets Nos. 1 & 2
“Enchanting music by a once acclaimed but now forgotten Frenchwoman. ” Gramophone Magazine, June 2008 “No.1 also dates from the 1900s and is the work that so deeply impressed Saint-Saëns at its premiere (which featured Pierre-Monteux, no less on viola). Cast in the traditional four movements, it is sunny and relaxed with a classical balance evident from the opening bar…..The Mozart Piano Quartet provide these works with enthusiastic advocacy and MDG’s sound is a model of clarity and natural balance – just like Bonis’s music” Gramophone Magazine, June 2008 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
