John O'Donnell (harpsichord)

From the House of Master Bohm presents spirited and musicalogically authoritative performances of Georg Böhm's keyboard suites and chorale partitas by the renowned Australian Bach scholar John O'Donnell. He imbues the exuberant dance movements in Böhm’s suites with rustic energy, lilt and swing.

In the suites' slow movements O'Donnell demonstrates the uncanny ability to make his plucked instrument sing, the oft expressed ideal of centuries of the finest instrumentalists.

In achieving this ideal he is aided by the angelic resonance of his 1995 William Bright Harpsichord. And Böhm’s extravagant “stylus phantasticus” passages, features of his choral partitas, are executed by the harpsichordist with Dionysian sparkle.

The whole of O’Donnell’s performance is informed by a life of scholarship at the cutting edge of early music performance. His performance eloquently articulates how much more that there is in Böhm’s music than the mere notes on the page.

The earthy quality characteristic of many of Böhm's pieces harks back to the instrumental dances of earlier times, yet his suites of dance movements also look forward to their zenith in the keyboard suites of J S Bach. Böhm’s music comes down to us almost exclusively via manuscript copies from the Bach family’s collection, at least one piece having been copied in the house of master Böhm by a 15-year-old Johann Sebastian Bach.

The era of the North German Baroque is a remarkable time in many respects. It continued the tradition kindled by Heinrich Schütz and brought it to full blossoming, while at the same time paving the way for the art of Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Philipp Telemann. Both facets can be heard on the present recording: on the one hand, the influence of the free compositional style which superseded the strict contrapuntal technique of Palestrina’s music, that had taken flight in the realms of Florentine opera and from there found its way into church music and to Germany through the mediation of Heinrich Schütz; and the music of Georg Philipp Telemann, represented here by his cantata ‘Nach Finsternis und Todesschatten’ on the other.

The vocal works by Franz Tunder, Dietrich Buxtehude, Nicolaus Bruhns, Christoph Bernhard, and Georg Philipp Telemann which are recorded here, however, not only stand in close relation to the tradition from which they arose as well as to the musical aesthetics which they themselves developed, but also show manifold links amongst each other – especially through their composers and contexts. These vocal works are complemented by organ pieces by Georg Böhm and Dietrich Buxtehude, performed by Hauke Ramm, church music director and organist at St Wilhadi Stade, at his church’s high Baroque Bielfeldt organ. This is one of the largest instruments of its kind in North Germany, and was constructed by Erasmus Bielfeldt between 1731 and 1736.

The present recording with Gotthold Schwarz and the Sächsisches Barockorchester also takes into account the specific historical performance contexts of the North German Baroque. Such considerations are underlined by the use of appropriate instruments: the soloists of the Sächsisches Barockorchester play on period instruments.

Bernard Foccroulle here continues his exploration of the north German organist composers with a recording of the works of Georg Böhm, a composer with whom J.S. Bach had come into contact at the end of his adolescence. At the foot of a manuscript dated around 1700 in which he had copied out pieces by Buxtehude, Reinken and Pachelbel that served as models for his own compositions, the young Johannes Sebastian Bach wrote that he was a pupil of Georg Böhm in Lüneburg. The organ works of this north German master foreshadow the young J.S. Bach’s first compositions in many respects; it was also clearly thanks to Böhm that Bach came into contact with the various genres of French music of the period. The Schnitger organ of the Grote Kerk in Alkmaar lends itself particularly well to this repertoire thanks to the power and the quality of its solo registers.

“The Van Hagerbeer organ of Alkmaar's Laurenskerk lends extra grandeur to Foccroulle's magisterial survey, impeccably articulated and persuasively registered.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2011 ****

“Bernard Foccroulle does his very best to put over this sturdy music with plenty of refreshing choices of registration.” Gramophone Magazine, December 2011

Simone Stella (organ & harpsichord)

Spanning 4 CDs and presenting over three hours of absorbing listening, this charming release explores the musical output of Georg Böhm -- one of the most important German organists and composers around the turn of the 18th century, and who is considered to have had a major influence on the training of Johann Sebastian Bach.

The compilation focuses on the main nucleus of Böhm's output, his works for keyboard, and divides equally into those for harpsichord and/or organ. Of chief interest among the pieces for the former instrument are the 11 Suites, works that were probably written for domestic performance, and these are joined by a range of other genres also common to the period. From the French Overture style of the Prelude in F to the art of variation that is the Chaconne in G, Böhm's compositions abound in inventive detail, and we soon move onto the works for organ -- where the composer's most important contribution to North German keyboard music, that of the chorale partita, comes to the fore.

Performing all these works is Simone Stella, one of today's most celebrated early music specialists and whose discography already includes two recordings for Brilliant Classics (Buxtehude's Complete Organ Music 94422; Buxtehude's Complete Harpsichord Music 94312). The release offers a fascinating insight into what is perhaps a lesser-known facet of the Baroque repertoire, and is certain to delight keyboard music aficionados.

Recorded 22--24 September 2011, OnClassical Studio, Pove del Grappa (CDs 1 & 2); 11--14 May 2012, Chiesa di Sant'Antonio Abate, Padova (CDs 3 & 4).

Harpsichord:?after Johannes Ruckers, Antwerp 1638; organ:?Francesco Zanin 2006 (German Style).

Böhm developed the so-called "Chorale Partita", variations on the Lutheran chorale, in the form of a multi-movement partita. In this he was of great influence on the young Johann Sebastian Bach.

Simone Stella continues his survey of Pre-Bachian German keyboard works with the complete harpsichord and organ works of Georg Böhm (1661-1733). He is one of the leading harpsichordists and organists of Italy, his earlier issue of the complete keyboard works of Buxtehude received uniform praise in the international press: "Thoroughly imaginative and engaging" (Fanfare), "Gelungen und überzeugend" (Klassic.com)."

Includes extensive notes on the composer and the music (English and Italian).

Includes a biography of the artist.
