Lunar Saxophone Quartet

Flux is Signum’s second disc with the contemporary music ensemble Lunar Saxophone Quartet. A saxophone quartet is by necessity a group that relies on new repertoire and compositions, lacking the historical treasure-trove of works available to groups such as string quartets. As a result LSQ have become a championing force for new music and compositions. This disc of the group’s commissions combines the works of established composers such as Gabriel Jackson and Michael Nyman with others by contemporaries of the group – a ‘flux’ of styles and influences from a group who seek to create music that is “accessible, without compromise”.

“Given the instrument's historical context, the Lunar Saxophone Quartet operate where classical shades into jazz...James Williamson's In Memoriam is achingly contemplative, while the title of Lucy Pankhurst's Diaphanousphere suggests the delicate webs of sound created by the quartet.” The Independent, 8th April 2011 ***

Fell Clarinet Quartet

From the vigour of Fitkin's Vent and the flamboyance of Piazzolla to the refinement of Eddie McGuire's offerings, the Fell Quartet have created an inspired programme of superbly realised works from both the history and present of this still-young medium. Featuring four world première recordings.

“The quality of the repertoire is matched by the quality of the playing. This is a group with a bright future.” MusicWeb International, August 2008 Disc of the month

“Their style is electrifyingly unanimous, from deliciously judged extremes of timbre – both the ice-cool virtuosity and moody whispers that colour in equal measure.” The Scotsman
