Vivaldi: Orlando Furioso, RV728

Vivaldi: Orlando Furioso, RV728

1714 version

Riccardo Novaro (Orlando), Romina Basso (Alcina), Gaëlle Arquez (Bradamante), Roberta Mameli (Astolfo), Delphine Galou (Medoro), David DQ Lee (Ruggiero) & Teodora Gheorghiu (Angelica)

Modo Antiquo, Federico Maria Sardelli

Naïve are delighted to announce the world premiere recording of 'Orlando Furioso', the 1714 version. It scored a huge success at the Teatro San Angelo in Venice, where it was directed by none other than Vivaldi and his father. The manuscript, rediscovered 250 years later in Vivaldi’s personal library, now in Turin, was thought to be a revision of an existing 'Orlando' of 1713 by Bolognese composer Ristori. However, the musicologists in charge of the numbering of the works of Vivaldi, Peter Ryom and his successor Federico Maria Sardelli, wondered why Vivaldi should have kept this music in his personal corpus among all his other scores, and noticed that the manuscript featured many different hands and numerous pasted-in corrections of the parts. Sardelli observed obvious similarities between the arias of this 'Orlando' and those of the first two operas of which Vivaldi was the official composer. His intuition was confirmed by the analysis of Reinhard Strohm, a leading expert on 18th-century opera, and the entire musicological community: this music is definitely by Vivaldi!

'Orlando furioso' of 1714 now achieves a new lease of life under a catalogue number that has just been assigned to it: RV 819. Only two acts have survived and Orlando is sung by a baritone, unlike the 1727 version. The 47th Vivaldi Edition recording and 13th opera, this first recording is performed by an outstanding range of soloists: Riccardo Novaro, Romina Basso, Roberta Mameli, Delphine Galou and David DQ Lee - don’t miss his breathtaking aria “Piangero” [Act 2, Sc.5].

“It contains some extremely effective music, bracingly performed by Federico Maria Sardelli's lively Italian period-instrument group Modo Antiquo and soloists, among whom Roberta Mameli's lustrous soprano shines in one tiny, brilliant aria that steals the show.” The Observer, 2nd December 2012

“Foot-tapping and furiously enjoyable.” The Times, 21st December 2012

“Sardelli has done a remarkably convincing job...Galou has a golden depth of tone and is one of the few singers here who sometimes withholds her natural vibrato for expressive purposes. Soprano Teodora Gheorghiu brings some welcome dramatic excitement...Most importantly, though, there's some excellent music by Vivaldi which is complete and unique to this opera...All in all, a triumphant musical resurrection.” International Record Review, February 2013

“Only two of the opera's three acts have survived...Sardelli's reconstruction is thoroughly convincing and he has assembled a first-rate cast to prove it...Notwithstanding incompleteness, this is one of the most rewarding performances in the Naive Vivaldi opera survey.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2013 *****

“this recording presents Sardelli's editorial completion...Consequently, Modo Antiquo's spirited performance cannot be experienced as a coherent dramatic whole, but it is to the credit of the performers that they strive for dramatic convention...Sardelli's conscientious experiment opens up an intriguing new perspective into Vivaldi's encounter with a story to which he would return in 1727 for his famous masterpiece.” Gramophone Magazine, March 2013

“Novaro's voice is especially warm on high E and F, just where so many baritones have registral difficulty. He shines in a long scene of recitative when Orlando is trapped in a cavern...the continuo players are dramatically attuned without being showy...[Gheorghiu] is a heroine with real strength...Sardelli does a beautiful job, making it appear that the characters are running the show.” Opera News, April 2013

Based on the most famous episode from Ludicovo Ariosto's epic poem, Vivaldi’s opera Orlando Furioso (first performed in Venice in the autumn of 1727) depicts a set of astoundingly lively and very individual characters in a plot that moves at a breathless pace. This unforgettable gallery features not only Orlando himself - here a female contralto, sung by Marie-Nicole Lemieux, much acclaimed for her sumptuous voice and dramatic commitment - who is given a series of astounding virtuoso arias - but also the tragic figure of the sorceress Alcina (Jennifer Larmore), the voluptuous Angelica (Verónica Cangemi), the valiant Ruggiero (a stunning Philippe Jaroussky), and the proud female warrior Bradamante (Kristina Hammarström).

Orlando Furioso is perhaps the most dramatically satisfying of the dozen or so Vivaldi works to be re-staged since interest in seeing the Venetian master’s operas took hold over the past 15 years or so. The action is set on the island of Alcina, an enchanted place of which the sorceress has gained control by stealing the ashes of Merlin. These are now in an urn conserved in the temple of Infernal Hecate, and jealously guarded by the invulnerable Arontes.

Alcina has offered the hospitality of her palace to the beautiful Angelica, daughter of the king of Cathay. Angelica is in love with Medoro but pursued by the attentions of the paladin Orlando, whose ardours she has fled, at the same time losing touch with her beloved. As the drama begins, Orlando, whose mentor Malagigi has instructed him to take possession of Merlin’s ashes in order to destroy Alcina’s power, has just arrived on the enchanted island. Astolfo, Orlando’s faithful companion, is already there, having fallen victim to the sorceress’s perverse love. Ruggiero and his spouse Bradamante, who are also followers of the paladin, are about to land… Marie-Nicole Lemieux, Jennifer Larmore, Verónica Cangemi and Philippe Jaroussky also headed the cast of the acclaimed, award-winning Vivaldi Edition recording (OP30393) of the opera which Naïve released on CD in 2004, and three of these outstanding singers also appeared in Jean-Christophe Spinosi’s much-lauded concert performance at the Barbican in London in early 2011, at the time this stage production from the Théatre des Champs-Elysées in Paris was recorded for DVD.

“[Lemieux] creates a tour de force in dealing successfully with bravado arias and in her expenditure of physical energy as she portrays Orlando in the throes of his madness...The vocal delights do not end there, for other soloists perform with panache, each showing a worthy technique...Spinosi's lively direction of the music as inspiriting as his orchestra's playing.” International Record Review, March 2012

“It's a tour de force: I didn't enjoy it much, but then I don't 'enjoy' King Lear either...[Lemieux] gives a knockout performance (despite the handicap of facial hair more suitable to Stravinsky's Baba the Turk)...Not a bundle of laughs, but you shouldn't miss this - it's a real eye-opener.” Gramophone Magazine, June 2012

“Alcina's is an 'isle full of noises' and conductor Jean-Christophe Spinosi knows exactly how to extract every last dramatic nuance from them...Jaroussky is a winsome Ruggiero...Larmore's Alcina is the triumph it ever was...[Lemieux's Orlando's] madness holds the eye and ear with every heart-wrenching syllable. It a performance as vital as this, however counterintuitive it might seem, Vivaldi can give Handel a run for his operatic money any day.” BBC Music Magazine, July 2012 *****

Vivaldi: Orlando Furioso, RV728

“This is a magnificent achievement, and one of the pinnacles of Opus 111’s monumental Vivaldi Edition. If Vivaldi needed a champion to more firmly establish his credentials as a fully-fledged opera composer, then this recording is it.” Gramophone Magazine

“Jean-Christophe Spinosi's imaginative interpretation of Vivaldi's Orlando, excellently cast and performed.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2008

“Spinosi and his excellent team of musicians have revised history's judgement of Orlando furioso by their compelling presentation.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2006

“Vivaldi's opera combines magic, heroism and comedy to tell of a seductive sorceress, a noble knight driven insane by love, a feisty fiancée who disguises herself as a man to rescue her bewitched lover, and a magic ring that helps ensure everything ends happily ever after. This recording bears the fruit of Vivaldi scholar Frédéric Delaméa's painstaking reconstruction of the original 1727 version. Marie-Nicole Lemieux's delivery of Orlando's anguished and often unhinged recitative is astonishingly good, full of conviction, passionate, and vocally brilliant.
When his sanity is restored, she achieves a tangible lucidity that makes the drama wholly satisfying.
Jennifer Larmore's sorceress Alcina is devious, vivacious, and venomous. Philippe Jaroussky's Ruggerio is adept at both delicacy and heroism and Ann Hallenberg is excellent as his fiancée Bradamante.
Ensemble Matheus provide bright ritornelli and intelligent accompaniments. The playing is often abrasive and intentionally percussive in fast music, but the performers also excel at the softer moments. Spinosi's direction is vividly theatrical, and recitatives are declaimed with aplomb, although sometimes it sounds as if characters cannot wait to interrupt with their next line.
Vivaldi's score has a dramatic stature greater than most of his other operas. He rarely devoted much attention to accompanied recitatives, but here he composed several that are unusually extensive and adventurous. This is a magnificent achievement: if Vivaldi needed a champion to establish his credentials as an opera composer, then this recording is it.”

Coro da Camera Italiano & Modo Antiquo, Federico Maria Sardelli

Orlando Furioso is one of Vivaldi’s most important operas. The story goes back to the epic of the same name by Ludovico Ariosto, set on an island ruled by the sorceress Alcina, and tells of Orlando’s unhappy love for Angelica. Composed in 1727, the score exhibits a wealth of colour and dramatic structure. Many choruses, arias, and recitatives figure significantly in the overall action.

“…is another fine account of a dramatically successful piece.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2008 ****

“Sardelli gives a masterclass in showing how the ritornelli and accompaniments of arias should be both cultivated and theatrically apposite. …the singing is consistently enjoyable: Anne Desler sings the title-role with effective virtuosity and conviction. Nicki Kennedy is a stylish Angelica...” Gramophone Magazine, November 2008
