Elizabeth Farr (lute-harpsichord) Johann Sebastian Bach wrote music for the lute throughout his career. He had in his possession not only a lute but also two lute-harpsichords (Lautenwerke), gut-strung keyboard instruments allowing a fuller range of sound than the normal lute. For the present recording Elizabeth Farr plays a lute-harpsichord reconstructed by Keith Hill from Bach’s own specification for one of his two instruments. Elizabeth Farr has been the recipient of many awards for her early music playing, including first prize in the Magnum Opus Harpsichord Competition in Michigan. |

Julian Bream (lute & guitar), Edith Steinbauer (treble viol), Beatrice Reichert (alto & tenor viol), Frieda Litschauer (tenor viol), Ernst Knava (bass viol) & Elizabeth Osborn (soprano) The Golden Age Singers, Margaret Field-Hyde The set comprises Bream’s solo Dowland LP (1954) – which was his debüt solo recording, played on lute - and his solo Bach LP (1956), both originally recorded on the Westminster label and justly celebrated at the time. Here they are brought together with a wide selection of Dowland ayres, sung by The Golden Age Singers with Bream’s lute accompaniment. The CD booklet has a newly commissioned note by Tully Potter, a personal friend of Julian Bream, and includes reproductions of the original LP covers, LP labels and photos of the artists. “…Bream's genius transcends all. Whether it's in the astonishing intensity of Dowland's Melancholy Galliard and Forlorn Hope Fancy or in the finely proportioned sense of pace and drama in Bach's Chaconne, the impression is ultimately of a meeting of equals.” Gramophone Magazine, October 2008 |

| | | Bach, J S - Complete Lute Music
Frederic Zigante (guitar) Why play the music of Bach on the guitar? There are a number
of answers but they all pale in comparison with that made by
Paul Badura Skoda: "We do not play early music to immerse
spiritually in another era, but because it delights and moves us
today".
The present recording comprises all of the works for lute by
Bach, together with the Chaconne. "Zigante is an ideal performer for this music, extracting the maximum from the music and eschewing
overstatement" Gramophone | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
