Julius Röntgen’s Waltz Symphony belongs to the group of six one-movement symphonies. The timpani and xylophone introduce the waltz and then drive it on offering an entertaining, vibrant work and a remarkable listening experience. The Symphonietta humoristica contains four loosely connected, pretty little movements and of all the works has always enjoyed the greatest success. The festive Vivace giocoso, with its repeated reminiscences of Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, is indeed humoristic.
