| | | Elgar - Sea Pictures & Pageant of EmpireRecorded at The Colosseum, Town Hall, Watford, 6-7 October & 10 November 2009
Elgar’s Sea Pictures sung by a man, and a baritone, of the calibre of Roderick Williams is an eye-opening experience for all Elgarians, making one wonder why it had not been done before. Dutton Epoch’s pioneering exploration of this repertoire has to be heard, and you will surely return to Roderick’s interpretation again and again. This is a remarkable programme of orchestral song cycles in which Roderick Williams is accompanied by the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Martin Yates; it also features the world premiere recording of Elgar’s songs for Pageant of Empire – seven gloriously tuneful numbers in Elgar’s most expansive vein. Ivor Gurney’s Light’s Out and Michael Hurd’s Shore Leave, both haunting and evocative song cycles with the Concert Orchestra, make this an unforgettable portrait of the art of Roderick Williams. This is a worthy companion to Dutton Epoch’s earlier CD of Roderick Williams in orchestral songs (CDLX 7199 ‘Sea Fever’). “In this absorbing anthology of British orchestral songs, wchich splendidly showcases the vocal artistry of baritone Roderick Williams, Elgar bulks largest...This disc has Dutton's quintessential features of thoughtful, original programming and high production values.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2010 **** “Roderick Williams cuts as commandingly articulate a figure as ever...Elsewhere, Jeremy Dibble does a terrific job orchestrating Ivor Gurney's Lights Out...the title song in particular distils a fragrant beauty that will haunt you for days.” Gramophone Magazine, October 2010 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | Elgar - Enigma Variations
George Weldon was conductor of the CBSO until 1951. On this release he is heard conducting the LSO in performances of ‘In The South’ and ‘Sea Pictures’ made at Studio No.1 at Abbey Road in 1953. Conductor and orchestra are joined by contralto Gladys Ripley for the song cycle. The ‘Enigma Variations’ was recorded in 1954 at the Kingsway Hall and produced by Walter Legge “Superb, astonishing performances from a most underrated conductor. Both orchestras play with non-stop intensity, with Glady's Ripley an exquisite soloist in Sea Pictures. Decent sound for its time.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2008 ***** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

The Symphony Orchestra & Royal Albert Hall Orchestra Andrew Neill writes: “Edward Elgar became an early star of the gramophone and the recordings he made (and supervised) between 1914 and 1934 remain among the great contributions to the recorded repertoire… Elgar was absolutely sure of himself as a conductor of his own works… He never tried to disguise the fact that his own music thrilled and delighted him.” This collection includes such gems as Beatrice Harrison playing the Cello Concerto and Fringes of the Flleet and will be of great interest to collectors. “Superb repackaging of Elgar's earliest recordings, before he re-made many works electrically. Sound is limited, but the music-making wonderfully evokes a vanished era.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2012 ***** “it’s legitimate to wonder whether a set of Elgar’s acoustic recordings made between 1914 and 1925 merits serious attention. The answer is an emphatic yes.” International Record Review, February 2012 “Lani Spahr has done a splendid job with these transfers, breathing new life into recordings, the oldest of which is now 99 years old. One takes it as read that the sound is limited but the spirit and character of the music comes across loud and clear. Impressively documented and presented this set is a major document, invaluable as part of our appreciation of one of England’s greatest composers.” MusicWeb International, 19th April 2013 “Elgar’s acoustic recordings have been issued before, but these transfers from the composer’s own gramophone library sound a lot clearer — some of them, paradoxically the earlier ones, remarkably so...this set is a precious historical document, not least for 1917’s charming Fringes of the Fleet.” Sunday Times | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
