| | | Sibelius: Violin Concerto
This CD features German star violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann as soloist in the virtuoso Sibelius Violin Concerto. The work remains one of the most popular late Romantic concertos in the catalogue. Frank Peter Zimmermann’s hallmark on this recording is his electrifying approach to the dazzling finale; few performers reach Sibelius’s demanding tempo recommendation for this movement, which critics have described as an ‘invocation’ filled with ‘demonic passion’. The Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra under chief conductor John Storgårds also perform two powerful rarities by the same composer, the symphonic poems The Bard and The Wood Nymph. The Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra has unique credentials in performing Sibelius’s music, having premiered these tone poems a century ago, conducted by Sibelius himself. “If there's a star on this disc it's Anni Kuusimäki, the harpist in the brief but weirdly touching tone-poem The Bard...Zimmermann is determined to peel off the mould of tradition and open up the work afresh...and accordingly gives us an urgent, powerfully driven view of this [first] movement.” BBC Music Magazine, February 2011 *****/*** “Zimmermann...commits to the music with a controlled emotion, delivering a certain coolness to the first movement which moderates slightly as the passion intensifies for the second...The orchestral playing is incisive, rich and powerful especially in the two tone poems” Classic FM Magazine, December 2010 **** “With his gorgeously ripe tone, easy swagger and intoxicating range of colour, Zimmermann is every inch the master. Storgårds, too, conducts with alert udnerstanding: those punchy tuttis in the first movement where Sibelius lets the orchestra off the leash are handled with watchful authority.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2011 “Frank Peter Zimmermann matches intensity with passionate virtuosity in this performance of Sibelius’s Violin Concerto, the Helsinki Philharmonic providing a backcloth of impressive detail, strength and incisiveness.” The Telegraph, 17th September 2010 **** | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. | | | The Sound of Sibelius
The present recordings of The Swan of Tuonela, Lemminkäinen's Return and Finlandia are previously unreleased. Stereo versions of the original 5.0 surround sound recordings of the Karelia Suite, The Wood-Nymph, Spring Song, Valse triste and Scene with Cranes have appeared in the BIS Sibelius Complete Edition. For inclusion on this hybrid SACD they have been remixed. Regularly described by reviewers as 'the pre-eminent Sibelius interpreters of our day' (American Record Guide) and 'the Sibelius orchestra and conductor of the moment' (International Record Review), Osmo Vänskä and the Lahti Symphony Orchestra have become synonymous with idiomatic, pioneering and authoritative interpretations of the music of Jean Sibelius. In fact the team's very first Sibelius recording, in 1991, caused a sensation: juxtaposing the final version of the composer's famous violin concerto with the original version - never before recorded - made for a disc that was of eminent interest to the world of classical music, as witness the Gramophone Award that it received upon its release. But the recording, with soloist Leonidas Kavakos, was also praised for its artistic quality, and is still, almost twenty years later, considered a classic account of the work. The Lahti / Vänskä team went on to record the well-known Sibelius works - the seven symphonies, the tone poems, Kullervo - as well as a large amount of music that had hitherto been all but ignored. The fruits of their long involvement with the composer now form the orchestral back-bone of the ongoing Sibelius Edition on BIS, and have been of great interest to Sibelius specialists and music-lovers alike. The present programme unashamedly glories in some of the composer's most popular pieces, all in the versions familiar to concert audiences around the world. Recorded in 5.0 surround sound during sessions in 2006 and 2007, the performances constitute a sonic spectacular - and some of the last Sibelius recordings by a legendary team. | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. | | | Anne Sofie von Otter sings Sibelius
“The vast majority of Sibelius's songs are in Swedish, the language with which he grew up as a child, and here they're given by a distinguished native Swedish partnership. The Seven Songs, Op 13, are all Runeberg settings and come from the composer's early years (1891-2). Best known, perhaps, are 'Spring is flying' and 'The dream', but there are others, such as 'The young hunter', that are no less delightful and characterful. The other Runeberg settings here, the Six Songs, Op 90, come towards the end of Sibelius's career as a song composer (1917-18). 'The north', as in all the nature poetry of Runeberg, touches a very special vein of inspiration. Along with 'Die stille Nacht', Op 50 No 5, which is equally affectingly given by these two artists – it's among his finest songs. Interest naturally focuses on the rarities. The Wood Nymph, not to be confused with the melodrama or the tone-poem, is recorded here for the first time. As well as A Song, there are two other early Runeberg settings, the 1888 Serenade and Resemblance, both of them also premiere recordings. 'The Jewish Girl's Song' will be familiar from the incidental music to Belshazzar'sFeast, and is affecting in this form – particularly sung as it is here. Given the artistry and insight of this splendid partnership, and the interest and beauty of the repertoire, this is a self-recommending issue.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days.
