Mardi Brass

British quintet Mardi Brass continues to map the far-reaching realms of brass repertoire. The focus this time is on living music by living composers, featuring Mardi Brass commissions by leading edge London composers James Hesford and Nigel Waddington. Also recorded for the first time is John McCabe’s atmospheric vision Hawk in Winter Light. In addition to these three premiere recordings, the group performs two rarely-recorded masterpieces: Michael Nyman’s Masque Arias and Jan Bach’s monumental Rounds & Dances. From McCabe’s tranquil gossamer textures and Nyman’s expansive, exhilarating sea flight to Hesford’s frenetic Chuck Berry/John Coltrane mash-up, this London-based group embarks on a journey which never fails to excite.
