Balazs Szokolay (piano)

This 2 CD set contains a new recording of the complete Lieder ohne Worte (Songs without Words) by Felix Mendelssohn.

These ever popular works, often of deceptively “simple” language and writing, contain a wealth of moods, from simple innocent beauty to dark or even sinister undercurrents, from good natured joyfulness to frantic energy.

Hungarian master pianist Balázs Szokolay catches the atmosphere of each piece perfectly, displaying a superb command over technique and musical content, never falling into the trap of sentimentality or cheap effect.

“Szokolay, a polished, unshowy technician, works his way through the volumes in dependable fashion.” Gramophone Magazine, August 2014

Sax Allemande

The piano pieces by Felix Mendelssohn that have become famous under the name 'Songs without Words' were written during a time we know as the Romantic era, with its emphasis on emotion, passion and individual experience.

In the present chamber-music arrangements with saxophones, these piano pieces take on an added charge of deep emotion and personal expression.

Renowned soloists, all lovers of Mendelssohn's music, have responded to the invitation from Sax Allemande to take on solo parts in several 'Songs'. As well as creating additional variety, the guest instruments – violin, cello and horn – further enhance the vivid delineation of character in these works. And what at first looked like a quirky idea, an imaginative and provocative reaction to the indication “... without words”, in the end became a special highlight: Andrea Maria Schenkel (“Tannöd”), inspired by a sample from the recording, uses words redolent of Mendelssohn's time to evoke, with great psychological insight, the emotions and states of mind typical of bourgeois society back then. The gradual unfolding of the mystery and its surprising conclusion are both characteristic of a “true” Schenkel crime story.

Friedrich Wilhelm Schnurr (piano)

Recorded in the Konzerthaus Detmold, Germany, 16-17 March 2013

When a world-class piano pedagogue, a pianist of great importance like Friedrich-Wilhelm Schnurr, places his art at the service of a children's music project in Namibia – one can only take one's hat off to him. The fact that the Detmold Academy of Music, their students and the Leipzig GENUIN label unselfishly support this project is also worthy of great respect. But when one places the CD into the player, only the music counts: the octogenarian's piano playing sounds youthful and powerful, gripping and tender. Schnurr plays the great small piano pieces of Mozart, Beethoven and Bach with a singing tone and a broad colorspectrum.

There are many reasons, therefore, for wishing this CD great success!

Irene Scharrer (piano)

IRENE SCHARRER, though perhaps the least remembered of the major Matthay pupils, was the earliest to record, beginning in 1909 at the age of 21.That in itself is a credit to her early fame, which she established through an extrovert, but always musical, virtuosity.

She excelled in such works as the Chopin Etudes, nine of which she recorded, and in other brilliant pieces such as those here by Scarlatti and Liszt, but the poise and refinement of her Chopin nocture or the slow movement of the Mozart sonata reveal another side to her playing that is sadly underrepresented on disc. Her final recording, of the Litolff Scherzo, was also her most famous; in its day it was a best seller and was responsible for putting that work on the musical map. This set reissues for the first time all Scharrer’s electrical recordings and also an example of every work she recorded in the acoustic era (pre 1925) that was not later remade as an electrical recording. For completeness, a discography of all her other acoustic recordings is also included.

“Her playing is a revelation and shows her to be a far more charismatic player than her distant cousin Harriet Cohen...What charm and brio, what joie de vivre! If the fingers sometimes run away with themselves with an occasional loss of detail, who can possibly object in the face of such uninhibited, joyous bravura?...This is an invaluable release.” Gramophone Magazine, November 2012

Variations sérieuses in D minor Op. 54

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy is regarded as the inventor of the ‘Songs without Words’ genre. He wrote eight volumes, each containing six Songs without Words. Michael Korstick performs these genial atmospheric pieces, which are all too often only heard only as encores, with a dazzling interpretive guise.

“Korstick - who has recorded extensively for CPO - specialises in romantic music, and is clearly completely at home in this repertoire...This is a disc that I cannot fault at all - highly desirable.” MusicWeb International, November 2012
