Martin Fröst’s latest releases have featured core repertoire for his instrument from the 18th and 19th centuries, and most recently a disc of his wide-ranging encores. All of these offerings have been singularly well received by reviewers and record buyers alike, and have contributed to Fröst’s flourishing concert career. On this disc, accompanied by the Australian Chamber Orchestra under Richard Tognetti, Fröst presents a wide-ranging selection of works all connected with dancing. The principal work on this disc is Copland’s Clarinet Concerto, and with special permission from the Copland Fund, the disc ends with the fireworks of the original and later revised, dazzling ending of the Concerto. Fröst also includes on this disc works by Lutoslawski, Anders Hillborg and Piazzolla, as well as an arrangement of Brahms’ Four Hungarian Dances arranged by his brother, Göran. “His virtuosity lies in his exceptional dexterity and agility…and in his daring control of the instrument’s dynamic and expressive extremes.” The Times “Performed in both the original and revised versions, Copland's hot, slick Clarinet Concerto bookends a programme that incorporates waltz, schmaltz, tango and klezmer. Not all of it works. Brahms's Hungarian Dances are downgraded to vehicle status as a showcase for Fröst's dexterity. But elsewhere (Piazzola, Hillborg, Högberg) soloist and orchestra sizzle.” The Independent on Sunday, 8th January 2012 **** “almost every piece is a novelty in Martin Fröst's dance-themed programme...This partnership of soloists and orchestra is an inspired one, not least in the smaller-scale pieces...There is a quirky and highly personal essay in lieu of booklet-note from Fröst himself.” Gramophone Magazine, March 2012 “No point in pulling my punches: this is a wonderful disc. The playing is superb, and these dance-inspired pieces will put a skip in your own step...It's obvious that Frost and his Australian colleagues must have had enormous fun recording this programme and their enjoyment bubbles through at every turn. Frost's virtuosity is a delight in its own right, but it's deployed in the service of unquenchable good humour.” International Record Review, February 2012 | | | (also available to download from $10.75) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Cigánski Diabli: Adagio & Furioso
Cigánski diabli (Gypsy Devils), Ernest Šarközi (artistic director) In Roma fairy tales, it is usually the devil who imbues Gypsy music with its inimitable vivacity. And when listening to Cigánski Diabli, you cannot help but believe it. The popularity of this Gypsy orchestra has crossed the borders of their native Slovakia into Moravia, Bohemia and much further afield. Of late, they have been giving concerts abroad with in creasing frequency – Germany (including at the Berliner Philharmoniker Hall), England, France, Canada, etc. The ensemble, made up of eight professional, classically trained musicians, has already received three platinum discs. A traditional cimbalom band? Well, yes and no. They have, so to speak, many more strings to their bow: folk music (ranging from Slovak to Jewish), on occasions walking a tightrope between pop and jazz, at other times performing Haydn together with a “classical” pianist or a symphony orchestra. And since Brahms, Liszt and Dvořák were inspired by the “Gypsy style”, why not turn things on their head and play their music the Gypsy way? With their characteristic virtuosity and vivacity, Cigánski diabli have entered the rarefied domain of classical music – yet in a manner entirely of their own and with arrangements not respecting the borders of genres. But what’s the use of borders when the music is of such splendour? | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

This set of 50 CDs contains some of Sir Yehudi Menuhin's most celebrated EMI recordings, made during the 70-year period that he recorded for the Company, and commemorates the tenth anniversary of his death on 12 March 1999. Arguably the best-known classical musician of the 20th century, Yehudi Menuhin was born on 22 April 1916 in New York City. In 1918 his family moved to San Francisco where he had his first violin lessons, aged four, with Sigmund Anker. At seven he gave his first public performance accompanied by his then teacher, Louis Persinger. A year later, in 1925, he gave his first full-length recital, also with Persinger. 1926 saw him make his New York début and later that year he gave a performance of Lalo's Symphonie espagnole with the San Francisco Orchestra. In 1927, at the age of ten, Menuhin made his European début in Paris playing with the Lamoureux Orchestra under Paul Paray. Back in New York he gave his first concerto concert with the New York Symphony Orchestra under Fritz Busch and in 1928 he made his first recording for the Victor Company. 1929 was equally eventful for the young Menuhin: he was given a Stradivarius violin; made his Berlin début with the Berlin Philharmonic under Bruno Walter; began studies with Adolf Busch; he gave his début in London and made his first HMV recording. In 1931 Menuhin made his first concerto recording, Bruch Concerto No.1 in London for HMV and in 1932, at the age of 16, he made what was to become one of the most iconic classical recordings of all time when he went to EMI's new Abbey Road Studios to record the Elgar Concerto with the composer and the London Symphony Orchestra. This event put Menuhin firmly on the international map as one of the great violin virtuosi of the century and he continued to be a prolific recording artist for EMI, both as violinist and conductor, for the rest of his long career. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
