Christopher Herrick (organ of Helsingør Cathedral, Denmark)

Dietrich Buxtehude was famously visited by J S Bach who walked from Arnstadt to Lübeck to hear him play. Bach stayed far longer than his employers expected, so captivated was he by the older man’s playing. That Handel also visited Lübeck, in 1703, further underlines Buxtehude’s stature.

The indefatigable Christopher Herrick has embarked on a complete series of Buxtehude’s organ music. The repertoire falls into two basic categories: free works, and works based on pre-existing melodies. To the first category belong the preludes and fugues, toccatas and fugues, ostinato works, and single-movement pieces such as the Fugue in C, BuxWV174. To the second belong the works based on chorale and plainsong melodies. A tantalizing selection of these is recorded here on the great organ of Helsingør Cathedral, Denmark.

“Buxtehude's organ music dives into two categories. There are the freely composed works in the standard forms of his time, and the pieces based on pre-existing music. The first disc in Christopher Herrick's series is a neat mixture of both. Preludes, fugues, toccatas and a chaconne are mixed with chorale preludes, variations and the chorale fantasia on Nun Freut Euch, Lieben Christen Gemein. Herrick's performances, on the organ of Helsingør Cathedral in Denmark, sometimes try a bit too hard to be ear-catching, yet their rhythmic vitality bodes well for the discs to come.” The Guardian, 16th May 2008 ***

“The recorded sound is warm and reassuring offering an ideal balance twixt instrument and acoustic. Production, engineering and playing are all splendid/” Gramophone Magazine, July 2008

“Herrick's razor-sharp articulation is at one with Buxtehude's fastidiously chiselled counterpoint…” BBC Music Magazine, June 2008 ****

“Herrick embarks on another epic for Hyperion, and the first instalment whets the appetite. Buxtehude’s delicate contrapuntal intricacy is offset by occasional flamboyance … the organ of Helsingør Cathedral, on Buxtehude’s home ground of Denmark, offers an excellent colour” Classical Music

“Herrick displays great energy and a keen ear for registrational variety” American Record Guide

La Capricciosa - 32 Variations on the ‘Bergamasca', BuxWV 250

Lars Ulrik Mortensen (harpsichord)

Born fifty years after Heinrich Schütz, the ‘father of German music’, and little less than half a century before J.S. Bach, Dietrich Buxtehude provided a link between the founder of Protestant Baroque music and its greatest master. While Buxtehude's organ music is comparatively well known, his harpsichord music has attracted less attention.

The third volume of the present series includes two Suites of French dances and the brilliant series of variations on an aria under the title La Capricciosa.

“This recording is perhaps the most essential of the three discs so far released in this series. The Aria: ‘La Capricciosa’ is undoubtedly Buxtehude's masterpiece, and probably a model for Bach's Goldberg Variations. Another excellent recording that all lovers of harpsichord music should own.” MusicWeb International (on the original Dacapo release)

Ton Koopman (harpsichord)

In this sixth and final volume of the Opera Omnia of Dieterich Buxtehude, Ton Koopman performs the remainder of the composer’s impressive but sadly neglected output of harpsichord works. As president of the International Dieterich Buxtehude Society, Koopman is considered to be the world’s leading authority on his music.

“Ton Koopman completes the exquisite solo oeuvre by Buxtehude with captivating élan. Witness the sheer richness of Buxtehude's luminous textures, as well as the finely drawn and grateful melodic contours.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2008

“Performing on two copies of Stefanini and Ruckers harpsichords, Ton Koopman completes the exquisite solo oeuvre by Buxtehude with captivating élan. For a musician with somewhat precipitous tendencies, Koopman here delivers a considered programme of mainly standard four-movement suites, interpolated with other contemporaneous genres, from variations to the flamboyance of the 'stylus phantasticus' of toccatas and the like.
Koopman's most significant achievement is the poetry he brings to Buxtehude's cultivated and understated world of pre-Telemann domestic music. This is where the Suites appear as the apogee of a tradition which Froberger honed and which Bach extended in his early works.
Indeed, keen ears will notice the prescient melodic seeds of the English Suites and, more specifically, the Canzona in C whose turns perhaps inspired the ambitious young Turk in the Capriccio in E (BWV993).
That aside, witness the sheer richness of Buxtehude's luminous textures, as well as the finely drawn and grateful melodic contours. The opening Aria in C (with 10 variations) reveals the warmth of both Buxtehude's hypnotically life-affirming variations and Koopman's concentrated placement and esprit.
Within such compositional calibre and refinement, Koopman also explores a steeliness in the investigative lines of the fine C major Suite which concludes the first disc; as throughout, the tempo relationships between movements are thoughtfully rendered, with the 'gamey' meantone tuning and elegant characterisation all conspiring towards a notable 'world premiere' set of harpsichord recordings. In sum, an outstanding release in this enterprising series.”

La Capricciosa - 32 Variations on the ‘Bergamasca', BuxWV 250

Simone Stella (harpsichord)

Dietrich Buxtehude (c.1637–1707) spent his career working as an organist in churches, but was also a prolific composer of secular instrumental music and wrote far more for harpsichord than most composers of his era.

Buxtehude’s position in Lübeck and fame as an organist brought him into contact with many of the greatest musicians of his day, and his style demonstrates the variety of musical influences that he was exposed to, particularly from German and Italian repertoire, which he combined to create a unique personal style.

This set of 4 CDs collects together Buxtehude’s complete music for harpsichord, including suites in the popular French style, several works that can be played effectively on both organ and harpsichord (including preludes, fugues, canzonas and choral elaborations), and variations on arias, which showcase the composer’s creativity and ability to compose music in a variety of styles.

Among the works featured are two new authentic harpsichord suites, discovered in 2004 and 2005, and the monumental La Capricciosa, one of the largest and most innovative solo keyboard works of the 17th century. Performed by Simone Stella, who has previously played Buxtehude’s complete organ music in a series of concerts, this collection is a comprehensive overview of the harpsichord music of a composer seen by many as J.S. Bach’s true predecessor.

“here we have an Italian eager to touch base with his inner Teuton, as Stella sets well-ordered lucidity above unfettered flamboyance. Indeed, he sometimes misses the edgy danger Koopman brings to Buxtehude's boldest strokes, but he's an unfailingly intelligent and revealing guide to a body of work that cries out to be better known.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2012 ****
