Christopher Herrick (organ of Ripon Cathedral)

“Following eight highly acclaimed discs of 'Organ Fireworks', the winning combination of Christopher Herrick and Hyperion turn their attention towards the calmer and more reflective repertory grouped under the title 'Organ Dreams'. Volume 2 consists mostly of original organ music spanning the period 1815-1952, all of which fits the instrument in Ripon Cathedral like a well-tailored glove.
Not every title reflects a dream-like state, though the disc's opening track – Dubois' Inparadisum creates an aura of calm. Frank Bridge's oft-played Adagio in E is also smoothly shaped, with its grand climax carefully controlled. Guilmant's 'Rêve' of 1902 is delicious, its impressionistic perfume wafting effortlessly.
With a running time of 19 minutes, Elgar's rarely heard Vesper Voluntaries of 1889 form the centrepiece of Herrick's programme. What charmers they are: mostly mezzopiano in dynamic, with occasional fuller-bodied outbursts, none of them outstays its welcome. They are followed by Howells' rambling Siciliano (the most recent piece on the disc), which Herrick keeps moving. However, he does allow himself plenty of time for William Strickland's convincing arrangement of Barber's Adagio.
The Liszt is a shameless piece of kitsch which borrows freely from Allegri's Miserere and Mozart's Ave verum corpus. More worthwhile are Schumann's Study and a quartet of miniatures by Samuel Wesley. The only fault with the whole package is that the portrait purporting to be that of Wesley senior is, in fact, that of his natural son, Samuel Sebastian.
In summary, this thoroughly enjoyable disc is sensitively and affectionately played, and works well at a single hearing.”

Thomas Trotter (organ - Father Willis Organ of Salisbury Cathedral)

“Elgar's one major organ work, the Organ Sonata No. 1, Trotter [one of today’s greatest living organists] reveals as greater than the sum of its exploratory parts. …the new recording sets the gold standard with its grandeur, supple expressivity, ideally judged rubato, and imaginative 'orchestration'.” BBC Music Magazine, July 2007 *****

“It is extraordinary that no major label has got Thomas Trotter, the greatest British organist of his generation, cuffed hands and feet for life. It has been left to the small Wolverhampton-based Regent label to do the honours – and it does him proud.
There are few organs better suited to Elgar than Salisbury Cathedral's Willis. It speaks with a mellifluous, unforced authority in a clear acoustic that avoids the generalised rumblings of many English cathedrals. The G major Sonata unfolds with impressive breadth and command of structure, a dramatic contrast to the intimate Cantique, a short work derived from an early (1879) piece for wind quintet, and the attractive eight Vesper Voluntaries of 1889.
Three of the final four works are transcriptions by a Three Choirs triumvirate of Elgar's organist friends: the Organ Sonata No 2 arranged from the Severn Suite by Ivor Atkins (Worcester), Chanson de matin (Herbert Brewer of Gloucester) and Pomp and Circumstance No 4 by the work's dedicatee George Sinclair of Hereford – GRS and his bulldog Dan from the Enigma Variations. From the latter, 'Nimrod' is heard in the transcription by WH Harris (St George's, Windsor) and it is only here that one might have wished Trotter had opted for a more measured pace and emotional response. But throughout this superbly engineered recording his mastery of tonal gradation, innate stylistic sense and imaginative colouring make for a recording as rewarding as it is timely.”
Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010

“There are few organs better suited to Elgar than Salisbury Cathedral's Willis. It speaks with a mellifluous, unforced authority (preferable, in this repertoire, to Trotter's own Symphony Hall Klais with its brazen reeds) in a clear acoustic that avoids the generalised rumblings of many English cathedrals. ...throughout this superbly engineered recording his mastery of tonal gradations, innate stylistic sense and imaginative colouring make for a recording as rewarding as it is timely.” Gramophone Magazine, August 2007

Benjamin Waterhouse (organ)

The early lives of Debussy and Elgar contain some intersting parallels. Born within five years of each other, they were both essantially self-taught; both rose to prominence in their late twenties thanks to popular compositions that reached a wide audience; and both composers came to be considered, within their lifetimes, as the musical embodiment of the spirit of their respective countries. They also share another point in common: an involvement with the world of organ music. The existence of transcriptions of both composers' works is indicative of an interesting aspect of turn-of-the-century organ performance: surviving programmes generally contain equal numbers of transcriptions and original works. Thus, for a few brief decades--but not for the first time in history--the boundaries of organ music stretched to include other genres.
