Cantatas for the second and third Sunday after Trinity, recorded live in July 2000.

Performing to an audience of more than 1200, we join Gardiner, The Monteverdi Choir and The English Baroque Soloists at the halfway point of their Bach Cantata pilgrimage for a concert in one of the great architectural landmarks of Catholic Europe, the Basilisque Saint-Denis (Basilica Cathedral of Saint Denis).

Featuring internationally acclaimed soloists including James Gilchrist, Lisa Larsson, Daniel Taylor and Stephen Varcoe, the programme opens with BWV 2 Ach Gott, vom Himmel sieh darein (Oh God, look down from Heaven), based upon Martin Luther’s German hymn adaptation of Psalm 12. The psalm describes how easily man is led astray by heresy and Bach deals with such grim subject matter by resorting to composing in an archaic motet style. The result is austere beauty and has the engrossing quality of ritualised worship. There then follows BWV 10

Schütz’s superb motet Die Himmel erzählen die Ehre Gottes (The heavens are telling of God in glory) follows. This is a motet that John Eliot remembers fondly, since it is a work he has known since he was six and he can still hear his father’s ringing tenor declaiming its powerful text. The concert ends with Bach’s prodigious cantata, BWV 76 Die Himmel erzählen die Ehre Gottes, a lengthy and complex bipartite cantata, comprising fourteen movements and divided into two equal parts.

We then head to Zürich to hear Gardiner and his Monteverdi forces perform within the stunning Fraumünster Kirche, distinctive for its slender, blue spire. They open with the two-part Weimar Cantata BWV 21 Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis (I had much affliction), considered to be ‘…one of the most extraordinary and inspired of Bach’s vocal works’, as stated by John Eliot Gardiner in his booklet note. There then follows BWV 135 Ach Herr, mich armen Sünder (O, Lord, I poor sinner). This is superb music and Bach concludes with a rousing ‘Glory to God’, to the Passion chorale by Cyriakus Schneegaß (1597).

With only two cantatas for this Sunday in existence, the concert ends with Bach’s so-called Triple Concerto, BWV 1044 (Concerto for flute, violin and harpsichord). Despite its similarity to Brandenburg Concerto No.5, it seems to inhabit a different stylistic milieu to that of Bach’s other concerti – one much close to that of his eldest sons.

“This ongoing recording project ranks as one of the musical events of the decade.” The Observer

“...this vividly scored piece of theatre [BWV21] places both voices and a colourful instrumental group in urgent dialogue. We are drawn into this right from the opening Sinfonia...Among competing versions only Richter approaches Gardiner in his apposite sense of theatre.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2010 ****

“...here, again, it the spontaneous and committed response of Sir John Eliot Gardiner's musicians which dominates the majority of performances...Gardiner is the king of dramatic moment...As so often in the Pilgrimage, James Gilchrist stands out” Gramophone Magazine, June 2010

Camerata Bern

Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis is a magnificent account of Bach’s concertos and sinfonias for oboe with Holliger once again proving himself unrivalled as a player of the instrument.

Holliger’s albums of classical core repertoire have become infrequent, and this is his first such for ECM since his 1997 Zelenka recording.

The oboist’s superb performance also attests to his long artistic relationship with the Camerata Bern. Soloist and ensemble are in perfect accord and impeccable ECM sound renders every detail in the music crystal clear. Holliger also contributes liner notes in which he speaks of his abiding love of Bach’s work.

“his tone may not be quite as fulsome as once it was, but the elegance and intelligence of his playing remain peerless, and the qualities that made him the greatest oboist of the 20th century are obvious as ever.” The Guardian, 23rd June 2011 ***

“This gloriously enjoyable recording, released with an ECM disc of recent Holliger vocal and chamber works, offers “reclamations” for oboe and string orchestra of Bach works familiar in other guises, yet originally cast for the instrument. The C minor work well known as a double harpsichord concerto is really, Holliger and modern scholarship contend, one for oboe and violin (Erich Höbarth), and sounds marvellous in that form here.” Sunday Times, 3rd July 2011 ****

“Holliger may be now in his seventies but age hasn't taken the edge off his technique. The unruffled legato with which he unfolds Bach's florid lines makes this performance equivalent of a super-smooth bourbon.” Classic FM Magazine, October 2011 **

“He plays idiomatically...with stylish decorations. Yet surprisingly he combines his modern oboe with Baroque period strings...Camerata Bern supports buoyantly and though with momentary minor tuning lapses...A fine testimony to an oustandingly versatile musician - most enjoyable.” BBC Music Magazine, November 2011 ****

“a recital of rare questing elegance...The deft, yielding rubatos in the slow movements afford an irresistable warmth which provide a compelling foil to the visceral originality of the playing...this is music-making which can only ravish in its undimmed personality and artistic ambition.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2011

Weimer Cantatas II

Bach, J S:

Cantata BWV21 'Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis'

Cantata BWV172 'Erschallet, ihr Lieder'

Cantata BWV182 'Himmelskönig, sei willkommen'

Emma Kirkby (soprano), Michael Chance (countertenor), Charles Daniels (tenor) & Peter Harvey (bass)

The Purcell Quartet

This 2-CD set with The Purcell Quartet and a distinguished group of soloists is the third in a series devoted to Bach’s early cantatas and the second focussing on the Weimar period. On an earlier release, International Record Review wrote, ‘The Purcell Quartet and guests are most welcome: even the most distinguished of period performers with larger ensembles can’t achieve the intimacy that the forces here have at their disposal’.

Uniquely, but following historical precedent, The Purcell Quartet employs single voices, rather than a choir. The stance is still controversial, but recreates the works as they would have been performed originally, and therefore stands out from the more conventional approach, the product of subsequent developments of massed choral singing. Accompanied by The Purcell Quartet and their guest instrumentalists are the vocal soloists Emma Kirkby, Michael Chance, Charles Daniels and Peter Harvey. Individual vocal and instrumental lines are allowed to be heard to their full effect, which greatly enhances the impact and meaning of the cantata texts.

This programme contains three cantatas dating from 1714, the year in which Bach was promoted to the post of Konzertmeister at the ducal court in Weimar. His responsibilities now included the composition of concerted sacred vocal music, including the writing of cantatas at regular intervals for Sundays and feast days of the liturgical year. Bach performed all three works collected on this pair of discs several times. They are presented here as they would have been heard in Weimar at their 1714 performances. The first two works, Erschallet, ihr Lieder, BWV 172 and Himmelskönig, sei willkommen, BWV 182, have much in common in tone and atmosphere: both are essentially jubilant at the prospect of the heavenly eternity awaiting the good Christian at the end of his life, and the images of the Trinity led Bach to employ three trumpets in BWV 172. In BWV 182 there is, instead of trumpets and drums, an intimate conversation principally between violin and recorder. The jubilant mood of these two cantatas is juxtaposed with that of Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis, BWV 21, which exudes a feeling of despair, only for Bach to bring in trumpets and drums at the end as hope gradually begins to dawn.

The Weimar cantatas of J.S. Bach form an exceptional body of work and it is thrilling to hear them performed in a way that Bach would have recognised, and by artists respected in the early music field. We offer this set at the price of two CDs for one.

“Out to impress, Bach's instrumental imagination soared in these works. …the playing is consistently rewarding, more so than the singing which at its most persuasive is ravishing, but (excepting Peter Harvey) is not without the odd hint of strain. Still there are marvellous things from all, and this version of BWV 21 sustains greater presence than Masaaki.” BBC Music Magazine, November 2008 ****

Bach, J S:

Cantata BWV106 'Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit' (Actus tragicus)

Cantata BWV21 'Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis'

Barbara Schlick (soprano), Kai Wessel (alto), Guy de Mey (tenor) & Klaus Mertens (bass)

The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir, Ton Koopman

The two works which have been chosen from the award-winning cycle of recordings of the complete cantatas of J. S. Bach by Ton Koopman and the Amsterdam baroque Orchestra and Choir for this album represent those composed by the younger Bach when he held positions as organist in Arnstadt (1703-07), Mühlhausen (1707-08), and Weimar (from 1708) and was not yet primarily responsible for vocal music. Supplying regular pieces for Sundays and holidays (“music of cantors”) was not part of the duties of an organist. Organists, however, frequently wrote works for funerals, weddings, and other special occasions. Bach apparently engaged in this kind of compositional activity from the very beginning even though only a fraction of pertinent works have survived.

Bach’s earliest vocal works demonstrate impressively that he understood how to operate on the level of the greatest composers of the late 17th century, indeed how to compete with Buxtehude, Pachelbel, and the older members of the Bach family, including above all Johann Christoph and Johann Michael Bach. Moreover, he knew how to introduce new musical elements into composing sacred pieces. Works like BWV 106 and 21 demonstrate how, in a deliberate confrontation with traditional and modern trends, Bach laid the foundation for a lifelong and extraordinarily productive occupation with the cantata genre.

The cantata “Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit” BWV 106 was composed for a funeral or memorial service. It must have been written at around 1707. The oldest source is a copy dated 1768 and made in Leipzig. It bears the heading “Actus tragicus,” a title that clearly sets the tone of the piece. The cantata “Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis” BWV 21 shows a compositional design of a manner typical of the early Weimar period. It was not written for a specific liturgical occasion but could be performed “at any time.” However, the first documented performance took place in Weimar on the 3rd Sunday after Trinity in 1714. Yet the work is clearly of earlier origin even though its first version - most likely a setting of various psalm texts - did not survive.

“These welcome reissues group by subject, rather than date of composition. However lack of texts/translations may, sadly, inhibit less confident purchasers. Tragedy and death were all-too-frequent visitors to Bach, inspiring deeply-felt-music. High pitch, though authentic in these early works, imposes some strain on voices.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2008 ***
