"The performances are robust yet sensitive… and the recorded sound is sumptuous. This is a triumph for Marlow
and his Trinity College Choir, for Chandos, and, above all, for Mendelssohn’s reputation as an inventive and
deeply rewarding composer of sacred choral pieces." International Record Review | | | (also available to download from $10.75) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Mendelssohn & Cyrillus Kreek: Psalms
For their second release on Ondine, the acclaimed Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir under chief conductor Daniel Reuss perform Psalm settings by Felix Mendelssohn and Estonian composer Cyrillus Kreek. The first release on Ondine from the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir was an ‘Editor’s Choice’ in Gramophone and awarded ‘Disc of the Year’ by German weekly DIE ZEIT. Cyrillus Kreek, a graduate of the St Petersburg Conservatory and a collector of folk songs, laid the foundation for Estonian professional music. This unique coupling highlights the familiarities in vocal and harmonic setting between Mendelssohn and Kreek. “Reuss draws impassioned and mellifluous performances from his Grammy Award-winning choir of 24 voices. Its beautifully blended, creamy tone (especially in the altos) and clarion-like tenors are underpinned by warm basses.” Gramophone Magazine, September 2012 “outstanding performances from this marvellous choir. We need not concern ourselves with such matters as intonation, balance and blend, so accomplished is the singing...hearing this choir in almost any repertoire tends to have the same effect as hearing the music of Cyrillus Kreek - once you have experienced it you immediately start to look for more.” MusicWeb International, August 2012 | | | (also available to download from $10.75) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. Knabenchor Capella Voca, Eckhard Weyand Musical and artistic success depends to a great degree on the ability of all those involved to work together harmoniously, in every sense of the word. At the same time, the diversity and individuality of each member of an ensemble needs to be taken into account and nurtured. These are the guidelines which the founder of the boys' choir and present choir director of capella vocalis, Eckhard Weyand, has adopted. The success of his concept is demonstrated by numerous concerts both at home and abroad and the way in which the choir has rapidly built up a reputation since it was founded. Following on from the ensemble's debut "Kein schöner Land", released on hänssler CLASSIC (98.360), here is another CD featuring the boys' choir singing sacred choral works and entitled Cantate Domino. | | | (also available to download from $10.75) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. 8 CD + CD ROM Mendelssohn’s reputation has suffered over the past century from the madness of the Nazis who banned his music, destroyed statues of him, to the rantings of Richard Wagner in his horrible little tract ‘Judaism in Music’.The fact that he was probably one of the most gifted child prodigies of all time has also tended to obscure the fact that his later works are just as remarkable as those of his youth. A Jew who converted to Protestantism, Mendelssohn was a prolific composer of sacred music and he made important studies of J.S Bach – in fact he was instrumental in the resurgence of interest in Bach’s great oratorios in the 1820s and 30s. Bach’s influence upon Mendelssohn’s own sacred music is unmistakable, however composers such as Handel, Haydn and Mozart all played a part in creating his choral style. Schumann commented on one of the works on this collection (Prayer – Verlieh uns Frieden), ‘ This little piece deserves to be world famous, and will indeed be so in the future. Madonnas by Raphael and Murillo cannot remain hidden for long’ This 8 CD collection contains many more such gems, and offers the listener an opportunity to discover more about the composer of Fingals Cave, the Violin Concerto, and the Italian Symphony. Mendelssohn’s genius is apparent in every one of the works to be found in this set. “a welcome overview of Mendelssohn’s sacred music in some lively and engaging performances.” MusicWeb International, December 2012 | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |
