Johannes Weisser (baritone) & Soren Rastogi (piano)

Johannes Weisser is among the foremost young baritones on the European stage today, and particularly celebrated for his recent recording Of Mozart’s Don Giovanni with conductor René Jacobs. On this his debut solo recording entitled “Visiting Grieg” he performs the songs of his fellow Norwegian, including “Melodies of the Heart”, op. 5, “Romances and Songs”, op. 18, and “12 Melodies”, op. 33.

Edvard Grieg believed strongly that the most important element in setting music to the words of great writers was to convey the spirit behind the text, and he achieved this aim at the outset of his career with his first set of songs entitled “Melodies of the Heart” which incorporates the poetry of Hans Christian Andersen. Also featured on this hybrid SACD are songs to lyrics by O.A. Vinje, a writer who was a major inspiration to Grieg, and many of the composer’s best songs including “The Last Spring” and “The Wounded Heart” are from the collection called “12 Melodies”.

Born in 1980, Johannes Weisser made his debut at the Norwegian Opera at the age of 23. These days he performs at the Théâtre de La Monnaie in Brussels, Royal Danish Opera, Komische Oper Berlin, and the Salzburg Festival. He has collaborated with many of the leading conductors of our time, including René Jacobs, Fabio Biondi, Rinaldo Alessandrini, and Philippe Herreweghe.

Monica Groop (mezzo-soprano) & Roger Vignoles (piano)

“The distinctive artistry of the Finnish mezzo-soprano is providing an irresistible new take, thrilling to both the shadows and the bright high-latitude light in this music.” (BBC Music Magazine)

“The important item here is the complete set of the Op 33 songs. Only the second song of the Op 33 set, Våren ('Last Spring'), has had many takers – Schwarzkopf and Tauber among them.
The rest are lucky to have a single recording in the catalogue, if that.
Grieg had been recovering from the deaths of his parents and was going through a bad patch in his marriage when he set 12 poems by AO Vinje for his Op 33 set, hence their preoccupation with darker themes of mortality and mankind.
Groop does well by them, making full use of her deep mezzo colouring. Her singing is beautiful, sympathetic, typically bringing a sense of calm and understanding to 'The Spring' ('Våren') and stretching to the weightier seriousness needed for a song such as 'First Things' ('Det fyrste').
Groop and accompanist Roger Vignoles are well paired, as both like to let the music flow naturally. This puts them in the opposite corner to Anne Sofie von Otter and Bengt Forsberg, whose award-winning Grieg recital (DG) comes with their personalities stamped on every bar.
Where they're in competition (only three songs here), Von Otter and Forsberg are instantly memorable, achieving lift-off with a tremendous sense of elation in 'Hope' ('Et Håb') from the Op 26 set, albeit at the expense of some pullingaround of the tempo from the pianist. There are people who are resistant to the Swedish couple's bold way with Grieg and for them the more traditional approach of Groop and Vignoles will be preferable. The recording quality is first rate.”

Marianne Hirsti (soprano), Kjell Magnus Sandve (tenor), Knut Skram (baritone) & Rudolf Jansen (piano)

Although famous for his evergreen Piano Concerto and the music he composed for Ibsen’s Peer Gynt, Grieg’s output is dominated by short works – exquisite miniatures for piano and song. In the pantheon of composers influenced by the traditional music of their homeland, Grieg ranks along side Dvorak, Kodály, Bartok and Vaughan Williams. All in their own way ‘saved’ for posterity the rich legacy of music passed down through generations of their countrymen. Grieg ensured that the folk tunes of Norway had a new lease of life when set to words by Ibsen, Benzon, Krag and Varen, and others.

These are not songs as Schubert or Wolf would have composed. They are simple, folk-based, honest and true, and display the true genius of the composer as a miniaturist. If ever the saying ‘small is beautiful’ applies, it is to these songs. After settling down with his wife (also his cousin) Nina Hagerup – the inspiration for many of his songs – he concentrated on establishing a Norwegian National School of music.

This 7CD set is the only complete edition of the songs

Many songs receiving their first recording

‘The Grieg song edition continues rather as it began – with many causes for gratitude, a few occasions for quite intense pleasure…In expression she (Hirsti) is similar to Flagstad, warm in feeling, and letting the affection communicate almost of its own accord…Christa Pfeiler sings with pleasing tone and …Voice and piano are well…Rudolf Jansen is a sensitive and skilful accompanist throughout’ Gramophone
