| | | Medtner: Complete Piano Sonatas Volume 1
Like his near-contemporary Rachmaninov, who called him ‘the greatest composer of our time’, Nikolay Medtner was a composer, pianist and an exile from his native Russia. His portfolio of works includes a remarkable series of pieces for his own instrument, including fourteen sonatas and some hugely evocative, deeply poetic miniatures. Medtner’s gift for melody is immediately discerned in the early Sonatina in G minor. The Sonata No. 1, Op. 5, his first large-scale work, enshrines autobiographical elements and is both intense and spiritually charged. Poetry and nostalgia flood the beautiful Sonata-Reminiscenza in A minor. This is the first volume of a complete cycle of the Medtner Piano Sonatas. “Canadian pianist Paul Stewart launches a deeply personal and complex project with unfailing mastery and acute stylistic awareness...to Medtner's own incomparable recordings, Paul Stewart adds a voice of exceptional distinction, finely presented and recorded.” Gramophone Magazine, March 2013 “Stewart has all the necessary technique to cope with the technical challenges; further discs will show whether his playing has the larger-than-life personality to bring its intricate, expansiveness into sharp focus.” The Guardian, 26th September 2012 *** | | | (also available to download from $10.75) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. | | | Rachmaninov, Prokofiev & Medtner - Piano Sonatas
New signing and exclusive Naïve Classique artist, Anna Vinnitskaya makes her much anticipated debut album on the Ambroisie label featuring an all-Russian programme of piano sonatas by Rachmaninov, Medtner and Prokofiev and a piece by Gubaidulina. This is Anna Vinnitskaya’s first ever recording and, unsurprisingly, it has already been met with high critical acclaim. Since its release in France, it was awarded the “Diapason d´Or” (within the “Discoveries” category) and most recently, the “Choc du mois” by Classica Magazine. After going through a period of pronounced disfavour in the second half of the 19th century, the piano sonata enjoyed a veritable renaissance from the start of the twentieth which was due in large measure to Russian composers. Vinnitskaya here explores the way in which the great Russian virtuoso pianist-composers (Medtner, Prokofiev, Rachmaninov) paid homage in their different ways to a genre that was already more than two centuries old. Also included is Chaconne, written by well-known Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina. At only 26, Anna Vinnitskaya has already established a flourishing international career, both in recital and orchestral performances. In 2007, she won first prize in the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition in Brussels becoming only the second woman in the history of the competition for piano to do so, after Ekaterina Novitskaya in 1968. “There's little doubt that she has the measure of each work, demonstrating not only formidable technical control but also a truly remarkable range of tonal colouring...there's no denying the sheer beauty and richness of her sound, the central movement presented in a particularly haunting manner.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2010 ***** | | | (also available to download from $10.75) | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. Nikolai Medtner (1880-1951) was a close friend and contemporary of Rachmaninov. The two composers performed regularly together, and Rachmaninov considered Medtner to be a finer pianist than himself. His musical style, like his family background was more in the German style than his contemporaries at the Moscow Conservatory – with Brahms being a considerable influence. His three piano concertos are well worth getting to know, and display superb craftsmanship and a highly virtuosic technique. However, a problem that dogged Medtner was, that unlike his friend Rachmaninov, he never produced a work that had an instant appeal to the man in the street. Rachmaninov’s has all the sweep and passion one expects from a Russian concerto of the time, Medtner’s concerto is highly intellectual, has fewer moments of passionate music, and doesn’t give up its secrets easily. His solo piano music is perhaps a good place to start discovering this enigmatic Russian master, and on these CDs are his 14 piano sonatas and his best known music, the wonderful ‘Fairy Tales’. Rachmaninov observed that all composers make mistakes when they are young, adding ‘only Medtner has, from the beginning, published works that it would be hard for him to better in later life. This set provides the opportunity to test this assertion as the sonatas span his early career to his old age. “There has long been a clique of Medtner devotees who have waited for the day when the Russian composer would receive his due. CRD's ambitious recording project will certainly enable a wider audience to get to
know this beautifully crafted music and in Hamish Milne they have chosen the one pianist fully equipped to champion it. Not only has he been playing it for many years, but his pianistic refinement and convincingly
authentic approach enable him to show it in the very best light. Hamish Milne's refined pianism and affinity with Medtner's style allow these CDs to entice the listener into a world rich in formal design and reflective
poetry.” Gramophone Magazine, March 1990 | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |
