British composer Christopher Fox, whose work is at the cutting edge of the new avant-garde, has been well represented on the Metier contemporary music label from Divine Art group. Featured on this CD is one of his most experimental and abstract works, “Catalogue Irraisoné” for a group of solo voices. Written between 1999 and 2001 it may also be performed as part of the epic “Everything you Need to Know” with instrumental overlay but the composer wished to present the work here in is boldest and most sparsely beautiful. A challenging but truly remarkable work. • The piece is performed by Exaudi (Juliet Fraser and Julia Doyle, sopranos, Tom Williams, countertenor, Jimmy Holliday bass, and James Weeks and Christopher Fox, speakers.
Since its debut in 2002, EXAUDI has emerged as one of Britain’s leading young contemporary music ensembles. With a repertoire that encompasses Ockeghem and Ferneyhough, Tallis and Xenakis, EXAUDI has performed to great acclaim throughout the UK and in Europe, and established a ground-breaking and much-praised discography on the British label NMC. This is the ensemble’s first disc for Metier.

“Fox is...deliberately querying boundaries of comprehensibility, and Exaudi serves these technique-stretching demands keenly...The surface may be disarmingly simple, serene even, but there's a deeper wisdom at play that keeps these aphoristic statements rewinding in the imagination.”
