Albert, E: | Symphony in F major, Op. 4 Das Seejungfräulein, Op. 15 for Soprano & Orchestra; Poem – based on Hans Christian Andersen by J. Grun. Première Recording Anna Kasyan (soprano) |
Osnabruecker Symphonieorchester, Hermann Bäumer Eugène d’Albert was born in Scotland but moved to Germany, before finally gaining Swiss citizenship at the start of the First World War. His ‘multicultural’ life is reflected in his works which comprise a wealth of different musical styles. CPO presents d’Albert’s first and only symphony which is infused with a Brahmsian spirit. The concert scene Das Seejungfräulein (The Little Mermaid), composed ten years later, represented art nouveau and receives its recording première on this disc. “The symphony, very Brahmsian, has a fine, slow movement and an overlong scherzo. Seejungfräulein has a text of cringe-making religiosity but works well as a post-Wagnerian study in mystic eroticism...[it] needs a bigger voice and a few more consonants than Anna Kasyan can muster, but she sounds good in it.” The Guardian, 8th April 2010 **** |
