“Given that Niu Niu was only 14 when he made this recording last year, his achievement is remarkable. His equable, rounded tone is underpinned by mature technique...Sometimes a big enough response to the music's soaring flight is lacking...Clearly though, here is a fine musical talent.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2013 *** “in purely digital terms, Niu Niu produces some remarkable playing. He has a wonderful leggiero touch when required: the 'Spinnerlied' from The Flying Dutchman is very fine (how good to hear a youngster revive this old favourite)...Niu Niu is able to breathe fresh life into an old chestnut like the Liebestraum No. 3. So - fantastic fingers, bags of potential but, as yet, no charm.” Gramophone Magazine, March 2013 “Poetic insights? Moments of repose? Those must wait, if they arrive at all, for the prodigy’s mature adulthood...the piano tone is varied and round, never appearing to have been stamped out by a music-making machine. Another good omen could be the modest, almost casual way that Niu Niu often concludes a piece, rarely emphasising the final chord.” The Times, 11th January 2013 *** |

| | | Julius Drake: Songs Without Words
Julius Drake is renowned as one of the best accompanists working today and has chosen the ATMA label to record his first solo CD. He has conceived this recording as a personal journal and performs selections from Brahms’ Intermezzi, Mendelssohn’s Lieder ohne Worte and Schubert’s Moments musicaux, among others. “It's a treat to hear [Drake] take centre stage...the recital evokes lullabies and moonlight, nostalgia and intimacy, all of it cushioned by Drake's warm sound, beautiful phrasing and affectionate touch...There's a lovely unity to it and the pieces are well ordered to complement one another.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2011 **** “Ironically, this solo recital may serve its most useful purpose in an accompanying role, for sophisticated background music at a small gathering or dinner party. Not that there's anything wrong with that…” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2011 | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. In November 1822 , Schubert put the final touches to the 'Wanderer' fantasy in C major, the fruit of a commission from his exact contemporary, Emmanuel Karl von Liebenberg, a pupil of Hummel and most assuredly a seasoned pianist, to judge from the formidable difficulties with which this celebrated piece is studded. Never again did Schubert attain such virtuosity on the keyboard, and it was this virtuosity, as much as the novelty of the work's intentions, that fascinated Liszt, who seized on the fantasy, which he frequently performed in concert and transcribed for piano and orchestra. “French pianist Brigitte Engerer here explores a paradox - how music's supreme lieder composer also launched, with a single work, the virtuoso Romantic piano tradition. She conjures some remarkable sounds from Liszt's transcriptions, from 'Die Stadt' in particular.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2008 **** | | | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. |

Brigitte Engerer, the internationally-renowned French pianist, died on June 23rd 2012 at the age of 59. Generous and impassioned, she attracted a wide audience in doing what she loved most: playing the piano, giving concerts, and communicating with the public. Brigitte Engerer left behind her an immense discography. In 2010 Decca France reissued the albums she recorded in the Eighties for Philips and Le Chant du Monde, devoted to the works of Chopin, Schubert, Liszt, Schumann and Tchaikovsky. All those performances are marked by Brigitte Engerer's tireless search for musical truth, a quest to which she brought the sum of her considerable talents. Now they are available as a 6CD boxed-set completed by recordings which were previously unavailable on CD: Schubert's Wanderer Fantasy, together with some of Franz Liszt's transcriptions of Schubert's Lieder. |
