Alberto Mesirca (guitar)

An important figure in the history of Romantic guitar music, Giulio Regondi was widely admired during his lifetime but unfairly neglected and forgotten for decades after his death. Most of the poetic, captivating works recorded here were rediscovered in the late 20th century and edited by eminent guitar scholar Simon Wynberg (who is also the author of the booklet notes for this disc).

Regondi’s early life is shrouded in mystery: his birthplace (probably Geneva, but maybe Genoa or Lyons) and parentage are uncertain. His father (or possibly stepfather or foster father), who was himself an accomplished guitarist and composer, tirelessly cultivated and showcased the young Regondi’s musical talent, presenting him as a child prodigy of the guitar at concerts all over Europe.

Regondi went on to become a much‐fêted guitarist and composer, touring with other renowned musicians including Clara Schumann, and writing virtuosic and beautifully lyrical works for the guitar. He was also one of the few 19th‐century guitarists to excel on another instrument – the concertina, which was a new invention at the time.

This disc brings together Regondi’s complete works for solo guitar, including the world premiere recording of Feuille d’album, ich was only discovered in 2010 and which Alberto Mesirca describes as a ‘wonderful piece’.

David Starobin (guitar) with Pina Carmirelli (violin)

Guitar virtuoso David Starobin has selected “favourite” recordings of 19th century repertoire from recordings made during the past 35 years.

The selection includes music by the 19th century guitar world's leading composers and is performed on both period and modern instruments.

As a bonus, this disc includes the first release of Starobin's recording with the late Italian violinist Pina Carmirelli of Paganini's Sonata Concertata. These remastered performances give evidence of why Starobin was recently called “arguably the most influential American classical guitarist of the 20th Century” by Soundboard Magazine.

Dale Kavanagh (guitar)

Dale Kavanagh enjoys a musical challenge; she plays with profound sensitivity, clarity and brilliance. On this CD she has selected Classical-Romantic repertoire in order to demonstrate her flawless technique. At the same time, her choice of composers says it all: anyone who is willing to take on Paganini has a passion for wild runs, arpeggios and energetic rhythms. Dale Kavanagh especially admires Paganini, who wrote more for the guitar than for the violin: "For me, the contrast between lyric melodies and untamed dynamics, chords and scales are a source of immeasurable delight." (Dale Kavanagh)
