Schumann: Variations (Impromptus) on a Theme by Clara Wieck, Op. 5

These are live performances of Schumann’s Piano Concerto, Albumblätter Op.124 and Variations on a Theme by Clara Wieck from Grande Sonata Op.14. The concerto was recorded in Tokyo in 1994, Albumblätter in Munich in 1980 and the Variations in Liège Belgium in 1977.

The next issue in the complete works for piano series on Claves, sees the young dynamic pianist Cédric Pescia record his second album in this delightful series. The first was volume 2 and was extremely well received by the press. Volume 5 will no doubt see a similar reaction.

Alexander Jocheles won a prize at the second Frederic Chopin Pianists’ Competition in Warsaw in 1932. His fame as a pianist was ensured when he won second prize in the first All Union Competion for Musician-Performers (Gilels won first prize). The recordings on this CD were made in the fifties and sixties and include Three Menuets and Ten Ecossaises by Schubert and Four Sketches by Schumann.

This sixth volume of Alpha's complete works offers another fascinating and original selection of Schumann. Eric Le Sage is accompanied by like-minded musicians for Disc 2, including Frank Braley.
