Robert and Clara Schumann were certainly exceptional parents - not just by the standards of the 19th century. Especially striking was how much time Robert devoted to his daughter Marie, their firstborn. Marie, Elise and Julie were the daughters for whom Schumann composed these little pieces and with whom he also made music; and these are NOT “childish” pieces. This CD is a delightful overview of the pieces and little melodies that Schumann produced with and for his girls and practically brings to life again the spirit of the Schumann household. As might be expected, a number of first recordings are represented on this CD. “This is a fascinating disc to dip into...Uhlig’s playing is sublime – incredibly witty and attentive to detail, though never to the detriment of the music’s flow. Nicely recorded too, with interesting sleeve notes.” The Arts Desk, 18th May 2013 |
