Mélanie Bonis taught herself the piano until the age of 12, when a close friend of the family convinced her parents to send her to music school. She was soon introduced to Cesar Franck and studied at the Paris Conservatoire for 5 years. She fell in love with a young music critic, but her parents were so against the marriage that they withdrew her from the Conservatoire, despite her compositional skills.
