The Complete C W Orr Songbook Volume 2

The Complete C W Orr Songbook Volume 2

Orr, C W:

With rue my heart is laden

This time of year

Oh, when I was in love with you

Is my team ploughing?

On your midnight pallet lying

Plucking the rushes

Bahnhofstrasse

Requiem

The time of roses

Since thou, O fondest and truest

Hymn before sleep

While summer on is sleeping

The lads in their hundreds

The Isle of Portland

1887

In valleys green and still

Into my heart an air that kills

Westward on the high-hilled plains

Oh see how thick the goldcup flowers

Mark Stone (baritone) & Simon Lepper (piano)

This release completes the 2 CD series which is the first ever complete recording of C W Orr’s songs for voice and piano. It includes 14 premiere recordings. Orr is considered to be one of the greatest English song composers of the 20th century.

“here is a situation where the quality of the music really does make its obscurity hard to understand...the composer's searching imagination, technical precision and sure self-knowledge all denote a striking talent...Stone and Lepper's interpretations are superb and memorable from start to finish - a situation that in turns says much about the strength of the music itself.” BBC Music Magazine, February 2013 ****

“The variety of Orr's settings is remarkable, although many of them have an underlying air of melancholy or nostalgia...Stone, the excellent baritone who has planned and sings this comprehensive recital so impressively, is obviously thoroughly at home in this repertoire...I recommend these two discs strongly to all lovers of English song and even more to singers” Gramophone Magazine, December 2012

“Fans of English song should be grateful to Stone and Lepper for their efforts to make this music better known.” The Guardian, 23rd August 2012 ***

Ailish Tynan (soprano) & Iain Burnside (piano)

Iain Burnside and Ailish Tynan return to Signum with their second disc of Irish Songs and arrangements: this time from a range of different 20th Century composers.

Although all of the sung texts stem from Ireland's rich heritage of literature (including poems from W.B. Yeats, Thomas Moore and James Joyce), the composers featured have a more transatlantic feel, with works by John Cage and Samuel Barber programmed alongside others by Benjamin Britten and Herbert Hughes. This disc continues Burnside’s series of recital discs with Signum – in particular his 2007 disc with Ailish Tynan of Irish songs by Herbert Hughes.

“Soprano Tynan has a fresh, light, but powerful voice, which never distorts and uses vibrato sparingly. She relates symbiotically to Burnside...The disc is full of interest. There are lovely, unknown tunes, seductively sung and hauntingly harmonised. It has pathos and wild joy in equal measure. An excellent recital.” Classic FM Magazine, June 2011 *****

“Typically, they all have distinctive accompaniments, some of them little related to the melodies at all...Predictably, Burnside is always a most sensitive accompanist, not least in some of Britten's tricky piano-writing. A most distinctive disc, well recorded and well worth investigating.” Gramophone Magazine, September 2011
