Spielleyt – early music Freiburg The Freiburger Spielleyt have chosen surprisingly “modern” selection of repertoire for an ensemble, whose focus has otherwise been on the music of the late Middle Ages. But as is noted in the foreword to the Straßburger Gesangbuch the selection had already been made from selected hymns, old and … new, many of which date back to the Middle Ages. Nevertheless, all the carols from the edition of 1697 are performed in the style of the time. Spielleyt has come up with a varied range of instruments, in line with its emphasis on the Middle Ages, including the Baroque double harp, the Baroque lute and a gamba. However the Freiburger Spielleyt has been fond of improvisation and playful dealings with musical material since the year dot, and takes advantage of that freedom here. “These “selected ancient and new songs” include gems such as the jaunty, anonymous Der Spiegel der Dreifaltigkeit (Mirror of the Trinity), which ought to be a classic, with its tinkly accompaniment and haunting melody...Regina Kabis’s childlike soprano could become a cult early voice, like Kirkby’s or Montserrat Figueras’s, and she is ideally artless in her Christ-child lullabies.” Sunday Times, 19th December 2010 **** | | | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. |
