“This lavishly packaged CD brings together two suites from Rota's most famous film scores plus a concertante piece for piano and orchestra which quotes from his film work. There's a seven-movement suite from LaStrada (1954) directed by Fellini, with whom Rota collaborated frequently. The brilliant opening sets the scene for the raffish charms of the film's circus folk, depicted in colourful orchestration and with vibrant, tuneful music that conveys the atmosphere of life under the big top. His themes, both romantic and rhythmically infectious, are skilfully interwoven between movements. Rota wrote the music for Visconti's Il Gattopardo ('The Leopard', 1963), before the film was shot. He probably knew that the set piecewas to be a lavish ballroom sequence lasting over an hour in the original print. The sequence begins with a previously unpublished waltz by Verdi (in Visconti's private collection) and continues in a manner akin to Verdi's own ballet music. The intention was to give the impression of 'a modest ensemble hired for the occasion' and this is just the treatment it receives from the Granada orchestra under Josep Pons. Nothing is inflated or allowed to disturb the seamless flow of this delightful dance music. Proportion and balance are just right, too, for the modest and endearing Concerto soirée in which the fetching piano writing, very much the centre of attention, is brilliantly performed by Benedetto Lupo and wittily executed by the orchestra. A most attractive disc.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 “More than anyone else, Pons brings out the fun in Rota’s music…Pons’s selection is well chosen, and played with all the panache one could desire. Harmonia Mundi’s engineering shows the music off brilliantly.” International Record Review | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin is as well-loved by the public as he is appreciated by his peers, who awarded him the Canada Council for the Arts Virginia Parker Prize in September 2000. At the helm of the Orchestre Métropolitain du Grand Montréal since March 2000, Yannick Nézet-Séguin has worked tirelessly to broaden the scope of the orchestra’s involvement in a variety of venues, while always maintaining his own rigorous standards and keeping in close touch with the music-loving public. Renowned as a prolific composer of film soundtracks, Nino Rota is chiefly associated with directors such as Zeffirelli, Coppola, and above all, Fellini, for whom he became the regular composer. Composed in 1966, the ballet La Strada is the result of a commission by La Scala of Milan. Rota grouped the highlights in a symphonic suite, which aptly summarizes the plot. Kurt Weill’s universal appeal rests foremost upon his unforgettable output of ballads and songs with their characteristic blend of satire and nostalgia. Some of them have become Jazz standards, such as the famous Ballad of Mack the Knife. Composed in 1933, the Symphony No. 2 was premiered in Amsterdam the following year, and constitutes the only symphonic work of Weill’s mature years. | | | (also available to download from $10.75) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. Nino Rota is renowned as a prolific composer of film soundtracks, and is associated predominantly with producers such as Zeffirelli, Coppola, and above all, Fellini, for whom he became the regular composer. As a composer of concert or theatre music, though, Rota is less known outside of his native Italy. Nonetheless, his output for these media totals approximately one hundred “classical” works among which are four symphonies, twelve concertos for various instruments, chamber music, vocal music, twelve operas, and ballet music. This is a chance to discover both these facets of Nino Rota’s art. This first collaboration on disc of the OM and its principal conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin marks the beginning of a new association with the ATMA label. | | | (also available to download from $10.75) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days.
