Anastaia Injushina (piano)

Hamburger Camerata, Ralf Gothoni

This new release features the most beautiful and popular keyboard concertos by Johann Sebastian Bach and his sons Carl Philipp Emanuel and Johann Christian Bach. Originally written for harpsichord, they are played on a modern piano on this recording.

Anastasia Injushina, prize winner of the ARD competition in Munich, has performed internationally and has made numerous recordings for radio and television. She has also performed chamber music with some of the world’s top musicians. In 2009 she became Artistic Director of the “Springlight Chamber Music Festival” in Helsinki.

The Hamburger Camerata is known for its wide-ranging and sophisticated output, its commitment to the Classical repertoire and to contemporary music.

Ralf Gothóni has appeared at the world’s most distinguished music festivals and with prominent European and American orchestras both as pianist and conductor.

“This is extremely intelligent, thoughtful, committed playing that displays both a grasp of recent trends in performance practice and a deep love of the music. Of all the pianists seeking to make a case for music of this vintage on the mdoern instrument, I can't think of one who succeeds more eloquently than Injushina.” International Record Review, May 2013

“This music is an apt vehicle for Anastasia Injushina's limpid pianistic facility and taste, but the touches of individuality in the writing and in the work's significance in the development of the keyboard concerto are outweighed by reams of stock, note-spinning gestures.” Gramophone Magazine, June 2013

Cleverly contrasting J S Bach and his sons through their piano concertos, Berlin Classics provides music from the High Baroque to the early classical.

A stunning recording, Sebastian Knauer is accompanied by the Zurich Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Sir Roger Norrington, absolute specialists in historical performance practice on modern instruments.

“Vividly illustrating the stylistic shift from Baroque to Classical, with Norrington's purposeful phrasing, this is among the best of its 'modern instrument' kind.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2011 ****

“Those familiar with Knauer's artistry from earlier discs will know what to expect here - unruffled, aristocractic poise and beautifully understated playing that puts one in mind of Murray Perahia or Emanuel Ax...Norrington and his Zurich players make alert, sympathetic partners, recorded in a well-balanced acoustic.” Classic FM Magazine, February 2012 *****

“Perhaps the real discovery is CPE's eloquent E major Concerto...Knauer revels in the details though he doesn't always have the last degree of hyper-reactivity when it comes to some of CPE's quirkier turns of phrase. JC's E flat major Concerto forms a delightful end-piece and reminds us that he's so much more than simply a model for Mozart's own keyboard concertos in a performance abounding with wit and panache.” Gramophone Magazine, February 2012

The 18th century is probably the most extraordinary period of transformation Europe has known since antiquity. Political upheavals kept pace with the innumerable inventions and discoveries of the age; every sector of the arts and of intellectual and material life was turned upside down. Between the end of the reign of Louis XIV and the revolution of 1789, music in its turn underwent a radical mutation that struck at the very heart of a well-established musical language. In this domain too, we are all children of the Age of Enlightenment: our conception of music and the way we ‘consume’ it still follows in many respects the agenda set by the 18th century. And it is not entirely by chance that harmonia mundi has chosen to offer you in 2011 a survey of this musical revolution which, without claiming to be exhaustive, will enable you to grasp the principal outlines of musical creation between the twilight of the Baroque and the dawn of Romanticism.

“Harmonia Mundi have somehow contrived to telescope that most industriously inventive of musical centuries into this 30CD set, by dint of ingenious thematic programming which apportions discs to different modes...it's an indisputable bargain box.” The Independent, 28th December 2011 ****
