Enescu Ensemble of the University of Illinois, Sherban Lupu

Sherban Lupu (violin)

George Enescu (1881–1955) is one of the great composers, although the world has yet to realise the extent of his achievement. Enescu’s small published œuvre of 33 opus numbers belies the amount of music he produced: he composed prolifically but, as he was both a perfectionist and a busy performer, much of his music is still unknown.

This CD reveals solo, chamber and concertante pieces featuring the violin, played by Sherban Lupu, who understands Enescu’s idiom like few other musicians.

“Throughout the disc Lupu's playing is truly idiomatic, with something of Enescu's own elegantly expressive manner.” Gramophone Magazine, December 2012

“Lupu has arranged several of the pieces in various ways and he also conducts the small ensemble at the University of Illinois that bears Enescu’s name. It’s clearly a labour of love for the Romanian fiddle player.” MusicWeb International, December 2012

Enesco: Trios

Enescu:

Trio in G minor

Sérénade lointaine

Trio in A minor

Trio Brancusi: Saténik Khourdoian (violin), Laura Buruiana (cello) & Mara Dobresco (piano)

George Enescu shares with Liszt, Rachmaninoff and Busoni the misfortune of having been a very great virtuoso, both violinist and pianist, who has had to wait a long time before full justice is done to him as a composer. For their first disc, the three young members of the all-female Trio Brancusi present three piano trios by Enesco, including premiere recordings of the Trio in G minor and the Sérénade Lointaine.

“A fascinating release. The Trio in A minor, oscillating between allusions to Romanian folk music and Lisztian chromaticism, is a major discovery and performed here with strong emotional intensity.” BBC Music Magazine, November 2012 *****

“In the larger trios the Brancusi audibly have the measure of the music and if they seem slightly more at home in the earlier G minor (they gave the UK premiere in london in March), their account of the A minor still compels attention. Heartily recommended.” Gramophone Magazine, August 2012

Tatiana Samouil (violin), Gérard Caussé (viola), Justus Grimm (cello), Vincent Lucas (flute), Frédéric Mellardi (trumpet) & Claudia Bara (piano)

All the works included in this collection were composed around 1900, during one of Enescu’s most productive periods. The artists performing them are Slavonic and French, contributing to making Enescu’s music universal. The works includes Ballade for violin and piano, Concert piece for viola and piano and Aubade for string trio.

“The performances are warm and sympathetic throughout, underpinned by Claudia Bara's sensitive playing...The instrumental soloists all acquit themselves with aplomb, not least cellist Justus Grimm and flautist Vincent Lucas, although the performance I admired most was Gerard Causse's of the viola Konzertstuck” Gramophone Magazine, April 2012
