His Majestys Sagbutts & Cornetts

SFZ Music is delighted to present this latest recording of His Majestys Sagbutts & Cornetts, featuring a selection of instrumental and sacred vocal music by Gioseffo Guami. Although little known today, Guami was one of the most renowned musicians in all of Italy during the High Renaissance, enjoying an illustrious career. Following an apprenticeship with Adrian Willaert, Guami was deputy to Orlande de Lassus in Munich, and then organist at St Mark’s, Venice, alongside Giovanni Gabrieli, before returning to his native and beloved city of Lucca (hence the Canzona ‘La Luchesina’ and the title of this CD).

Guami’s vocal music demonstrates both a mastery of counterpoint and a sensitivity to text setting that marks him out as one of the forward-looking composers of his time. His surviving instrumental music often includes elaborate written-out ornamentation, giving us a rare glimpse of the style of virtuosic passagework that the most expert instrumentalists of the time might otherwise have improvised. The influence of his encounters with some of the greatest composers of the period is audible in Guami’s music, but nevertheless, the distinct and individual voice of this neglected master musician shines throughout the music in this collection.

When the coveted position of first organist at St Mark’s, Venice became vacant in 1588, the leading musicians of the basilica were consulted and were unanimous in recommending Gioseffo Guami for the position. Their written testimonies survive and speak very clearly of the high esteem in which he was held by some of the finest musicians of his age. Under the tuition and supervision of Jamie Savan the performing editions for this project came to fruition in partnership with Newcastle University music department.

Beautifully performed by His Majestys Sagbutts & Cornetts, with organist Jan Waterfield and superb singing from Nicholas Mulroy and Eamonn Dougan, this CD presents a rich and fascinating programme.

“in all the pieces, we are left marveling at the skill and musicianship of these fine singers and players...Every detail from the tuning to the changes in tempo to preparing for the cadences is well prepared and beautifully executed. I hope there will be much more Guami to come: meanwhile buy this and give it to your friends.” Early Music Review, 1st September 2015

Richard Lester (harpsichord/organ)

This programme explores Italian keyboard music of the sixteenth century with works by Girolamo Diruta, Claudio Merulo, Andrea and Giovanni Gabreli, Gioseffo Guami, and Antonio Mortaro. As Richard Lester explains in his extended liner note, his own study of contemporary performance treatise, particularly that of Diruta, for correct period fingering, ornamentation and registration for these works, informs his performances of these pieces and expresses their unique character.

A 90-page score has also been compiled and edited by Richard Lester, NMP1015, which includes this CD and a DVD video where Richard demonstrates the techniques for accurate and correct performance of these works.
