Friedrich Wilhelm Zachow (1663-1712) found importance in his day as a composer of keyboard music and church cantatas, but today his name arises almost exclusively as a teacher of Handel. Although a substantial portion of Zachow’s catalogue has been lost and the remaining works are not always easy to date, one could almost use his compositions to trace the development of German church cantatas from Heinrich Schutz to J.S. Bach. The Zachow Project aims to record of all the Zachow Cantatas currently only available in archived manuscript form. All of Zachow’s extant cantatas amount to at least six CDs. Onno Verschoor (Accademia Amster dam): “An unkown composer, that’s an adventure! We believe in it, because of the universal quality of Zachow’s music.”

“This disc is definitely welcome as it pays attention to a composer whose vocal oeuvre has been unjustly neglected for too long. The performances of the solo parts may not be consistently of the highest standard, but they are good enough to demonstrate the qualities of Zachow's music.”
