Noëmi Nadelmann (soprano-Madama Lang), Ofelia Sala (soprano-Madama Herz), Lothar Odinius (tenor-Inspizient) & Carsten Sabrowski (bass-Buff)

Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester, Sir Neville Marriner (conductor) & Otto Schenk (director)

Mozart’s Der Schauspieldirektor is a comic Singspiel written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to a German libretto by Gottlieb Stephanie, an Austrian Schauspieldirektor. It is with great pleasure for Phoenix Edition to have Austrian Otto Schenk as theatre director, an all round genius who is not only a talented theatre director but actor and production designer, previously producing works at the Vienna State Opera, La Scala and Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

Der Schauspieldirektor is an opera in one act. The musical content is surrounded by spoken dialogue, a style which was very typical at the time. It is consequently almost never performed in its original form, but rather in various adaptations designed to present Mozart's excellent music in a more appropriate setting. It has been said the character and scale of the overture are similar to those of the overture to Le nozze di Figaro, which was written at the same time and premiered later the same year.

“one of the most successful recording conductors of all time.” Gramophone Magazine

“Where Marriner consistently scores is in the extra sense of fun he conveys” Gramophone Magazine (on Marriner's previous Mozart recordings)

“Long may Marriner continue in this delightful repertoire” Gramophone Magazine (on Marriner's previous Mozart recordings)

“The performances with Marriner are thoroughly musical and enjoyably full of the detail which comes with familiarity.” Gramophone Magazine (on Marriner's previous Mozart recordings)

. . . striking productions of all 22 operas, plus a wealth of bonus interviews with conductors, singers, and other members of the artistic team . . . Part of the enticement lies with the casts and productions. Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute), for example, features such top-tier artists as the spectacular Diana Damrau as the Queen of the Night, René Pape as a sterling, pensive High Priest Sarastro, and Paul Groves as Tamino . . . this performance of the opera is as compelling visually as it is vocally. Don't miss Pape's designer denim casuals and provocatively demonic goatee in the bonus section . . . Le Nozze di Figaro has a dream cast . . . Of these productions, 90% reflect the zeitgeist of new directors who tend to appeal to viewers of all ages. Some of the more obscure directors especially whet the appetite . . . On the levels of edification, enjoyment, and sheer entertainment-the last value sorely missing from many audio-only recordings-this remarkable project scores a solid 10. Record Review
