Drawn from across the composer's lengthy career, this collection of Part-Songs and Choral-Works explores the great variety and range within Elgar's work for choir and voices. Along with more well-known works such as 'Love' and 'Deep in my Soul' there are early pieces such as 'O Salutaris hostia' (composed for small amateur choirs) that give hints of his later mature style, through to the 1928 piece 'I sing the Birth' – a work that shows Elgar's ability to adapt to more contemporary styles of 20th-century choral composition. The Rodolfus Choir have established themselves as one of the leading youth choirs in Britain, made up of singers aged from 16 to 25 who have been chosen from past and present members of the Eton Choral Courses for prospective choral scholars. Many members of the Choir are choral scholars, some are at music college, and most hope to make a career in music. The Rodolfus Choir and Ralph Allwood are well-known for imaginative programming, and for presenting new music. The Rodolfus Choir’s recent CD recordings with Signum include music as diverse as Howells, Monteverdi, Grier, Tallis and the German Romantics. “The strength and major appeal of this disc will surely be the opportunity it presents to discover just how much Elgar could be an explorer … Elgarians and others tempted by the works assembled in this new collection can be assured that it is on a par with the best of them” International Record Review, March 2013 “The Rodolfus Choir shine strongly in these well-loved Elgar part-songs choral works.” MusicWeb International, April 2013 “The delicacy (and occasional fragility) of the Rodolfus's young voices make the effect [in 'Owls'] even more poignant...[Give unto the Lord] rounds off this hugely enjoyable disc with aplomb.” Gramophone Magazine, April 2013 “The combination of Ralph Allwood and the Rodolfus Choir usually means quality. It does again here in this excellently sung recital of Elgar choral pieces. It's hard, in fact, to imagine 'Go, song of mine', the opening item, done better...When simplicity of utterance is necessary, the Rodolfus deliver it unfussily.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2013 **** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Ave MariaFourteen ancient and modern musical settings
David Terry (organ) The London Oratory School Schola, Lee Ward (director) A definitive collection of settings of the ancient Prayer to Mary, beautifully sung by the boys and men’s choir of the London Oratory School Schola. A compendium of different styles showing how composers across the ages have approached setting these most famous words. Settings ranging from the fifteenth century to the present day. The Schola has quickly established itself as a leading boys’ choir, singing a large and varied repertoire, encompassing sacred and secular works from early to contemporary music. It performs regularly with the major London orchestras and national opera companies, has made numerous film soundtracks, (the boys are the voices behind the double platinum award winning soundtracks of The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban). “The choir offers precise, sensitive and sonorous singing – with a touch of vocal richness that you seldom hear from Anglican ensembles” American Record Guide, June 2009 | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

| | | A Mother’s LoveMusic For Mary
“Despite undoubted stylistic variety in the choice of music, the homogeneity of the sentiment here can be a little stifling. The Sixteen's performances are, however, irreproachably sympathetic.” BBC Music Magazine, November 2007 **** “…the programme is perceptively chosen to show how much wonderful music the image of the Virgin Mary has inspired over five centuries. Performances throughout show this marvellous choir at their most eloquent, beautifully balanced and blended. Highly recommended for sheer pleasure, but also as a way of exploring a wide range of repertoire.” Gramophone Magazine, November 2007 “With its sentimental title, this collection is clearly aimed at the wider market–place. But the programme is perceptively chosen to show how much wonderful music the image of the Virgin Mary has inspired over five centuries. Grieg's opening Ave maris stella is immediately inviting: it has a ravishing simplicity but is passionate too and it is followed by rich, lively music by Cornysh and Josquin laced with the special harmonic character of its period. Next comes expansive Bruckner with a thundering organ and then a delightful surprise, Saint–Saëns's delicious Ave Maria – a real hit. The simple beauty of Britten's A Hymn to theVirgin captivates the ear, while Mendelssohn's readily melodic and characteristically ambitious Ave Maria moves forward with great fervour, splendidly climaxed by Christophers. Other highlights include Margaret Rizza's richly plangent Ave generosa, eloquently set to words by Hildegard of Bingen, and the romantically soaring Fauré Ave Maria, again using the organ to add background colour, followed by the gentle contrast of Palestrina's Sicut lilium. Liszt wrote his Ave maris stella while awaiting ordination as Abbé in the Vatican: its hint of austerity is not entirely banished by a natural exuberance which intensifies the plea 'Loosen the chains of the guilty' with which Liszt no doubt closely identified. The programme ends with the dedicated, passionate serenity of Lassus's Salve regina, a most satisfying coda. Performances throughout show this marvellous choir at their most eloquent, beautifully balanced and blended. Highly recommended for sheer pleasure, but also as a way of exploring a wide range of repertoire.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
