Dmitri Kabalevsky is ranked with Shostakovich and Prokofiev among the former Soviet Union’s leading composers, although his music is lesser known. Kabalevsky was not as adventurous as his contemporaries in terms of harmony and preferred a more conventional diatonicism, but his natural talent for catchy melodies and clear structures were appealing to audiences.
