| | | Rodrigo: Guitar Music Volume 2
Rodrigo’s music for solo guitar is not extensive but represents an important pillar of the repertoire, ranging from vignettes to sonatas over a six-decade period. The 1933 Toccata was rediscovered in 2005 and has since provided an ambitiously virtuosic vehicle for today’s guitarists. Rodrigo flecked his works with elements of fantasy, flamenco and bird song while Un tiempo fue Itálica famosa, one of his very greatest works in the genre, is superbly impassioned. The tender Pastoral, originally for piano, is here transcribed for guitar by Jérémy Jouve whose first volume in this series (8570286) received a three-star review (“The young French guitarist plays brilliantly”) in the Penguin Guide. |

| | | Segovia - 1950s American Recordings Volume 5
Volume 5 of Segovia’s 1950s American recordings includes music by composers of various nationalities, (Italian, Spanish, Polish, Argentinian, Venezuelan, and Swiss), demonstrating the international appeal of the guitar. The diversity of musical styles featured is considerable, ranging from the folkloric appeal of South America to the more esoteric inwardness of European composers. “Castelnuovo-Tedesco and Tansman dominate the latest volume in this splendid series. It's a particular pleasure to hear Segovia play with the string quartet in Castelnuovo-Tedesco's Quintet.” BBC Music Magazine, July 2008 ***** | | | (also available to download from $9.00) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. | | | Rey de la Torre
This CD restores to the catalog one of the most popular classical guitar LPs from the 50s and 60s. Originally recorded for Philharmonia in 1952, it was last released on a Nonesuch/Elektra LP. Also featured is Rey de la Torre’s studio recording of the Boccherini D Major “Fandango” Quintet (the premiere recording of this work, made in 1951) and a live concert performance of Villa-Lobos’s Etude No. 11, issued for the first time. | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | Spanish Classics - Rodrigo Piano Music Volume 1
“A first-class collection from the perceptive and sympathetic Artur Pizarro. He opens brilliantly with Rodrigo’s evocation of Albéniz, A l’ombre de Torre Bermeja, here, as elsewhere, bringing out its affinities with the guitar. … Among the simpler items, the nostalgic Preludio, and delicate Pastorale, the rippling Serenata española and charming Air de Ballet are all highly beguiling. In sum, Pizarro captures the varying moods of this music very well. If you have not discovered Rodrigo at the piano I urge you to try this generous collection, vividly recorded and with excellent booklet-notes by Graham Wade: you won’t be disappointed.” Gramophone “Rodrigo's piano music appears infrequently in the recital room, though excellent two-CD surveys have appeared: Gregory Allen on Bridge and Sara Marianovich on Sony. Now comes a first-class collection from the perceptive and sympathetic Artur Pizarro, who opens brilliantly with Rodrigo's evocation of Albéniz, A l'ombrede Torre Bermeja, here, as elsewhere, bringing out its affinities with the guitar. Cuatro Piezas include a glittering 'Fandango' and a touchingly pensive 'Prayer of the Princess of Castille', while among the Andalusian Pictures (Cuatro Estampasandaluzas), 'Twilight over the Guadalquivir River' makes a reflective contrast with the quirky bravura of the devilish 'Seguidillas'. Among the simpler items, the nostalgic Preludio, and delicate Pastorale, the rippling Serenataespañola and charming Air de Ballet are all highly beguiling. Pizarro captures the varying moods of this music very well. This generous collection is vividly recorded and with excellent bookletnotes by Graham Wade.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 | | | (also available to download from $6.00) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. | | | Rodrigo: Complete Orchestral Works, Vol. 1
"Eighteenth-century Spain is evoked in these works, full of the melodies and angular rhythms of its gypsy and other folk cultures. The five "youthful" pieces of the third suite are overflowing with good tunes and danceable rhythms."
