Pan Voyevoda Suite

Snow Maiden Suite

“Kees Bakels… secures phenomenally crisp ensemble from this orchestra of international players than he founded as recently as 1998. It is good to be reminded of the extraordinary brilliance of Rimsky's orchestrating, here wonderfully clarified thanks to the playing; it's never studied or lacking in thrust.” Gramophone Magazine, September 2006

The Tsar's Bride Overture

Overture on Russian Themes, Op. 28

The Maid of Pskov: Overture

Russian Easter Festival Overture, Op. 36

Dubinushka Op. 62

Capriccio espagnol, Op. 34

Rimsky-Korsakov’s colourful Capriccio espagnol reflects a Russian fascination with distant lands, evoking sunny climes and exotic dancing in one of the composer’s most popular and uplifting scores. Steeped in the cultural nationalism of the ‘Mighty Handful’, the Overtures are linked to deeply Russian themes and tales, portraying dramatic life amongst the Tsars with brilliant orchestration and inspired use of folk or liturgical melodies. This release follows the multi-GRAMMY®-nominated and Emmy Award-winning Seattle Symphony ‘spectacular’ (MusicWeb International) recording of Scheherazade (8572693).

“the Seattle Symphony's performances for Gerard Schwarz don't just sparkle, as you would expect at this kind of super-charged Amercian technical level. Their brilliant response is also strongly characterised at every point: Capriccio espagnol here has a dark and spicy pungency that makes it something more than just a pretty Spanish postcard...It's genuinely difficult to imagine better performances. This is a delicious orchestral feast.” Classic FM Magazine, December 2011 *****

La Princesse lontaine: Prelude

The Enchanted Kingdom: Prelude

A stunning 2CD of Russian music from Mikhail Pletnev and the Russian National Orchestra that includes a mix of the familiar and the not so familiar. Liadov’s exquisite miniature tone poems and Glinka’s effervescent overture to Ruslan and Ludmila rub shoulders with a rare Tchaikovsky overture and two preludes by Tcherepnin. All the composers here had a deep knowledge and respect for the traditional music of Mother Russia, and every work on these discs has the unmistakable sound of Russia irrespective of whether it was composed under the Tsarist or Soviet regime.

Recordings made in 1993/94

“Russian lollipops familiar (Glinka Ruslan, Borodin Prince Igor) and deeply unfamiliar (Tchaikovsky's very early Overture in F, for instance, or Nikolai Tcherepnin's Enchanted Kingdom).” BBC Music Magazine, April 2011 ****

“Pletnev is at his most successful with the more reflective introduction to Semyon Kotko, and with the beautiful evocation of dawn over the Moscow River that opens Khovanshchina. Tchaikovsky's almost unknown early overture is a curiosity. It is not hard to observe some of the features that were to distinguish Tchaikovsky's style, with hindsight, but who could have had the foresight to see the genius that would charge them?” Gramophone Magazine, December 1994

Rimsky Korsakov:

Neapolitan Song, Op. 63

The Maid of Pskov: Overture

The Tsar's Bride Overture

Capriccio espagnol, Op. 34

Legend (Conte féerique), Op. 29

Sinfonietta on Russian Themes in A minor, Op. 31

“…Tsar's Bride… thrills with the riding rhythms of Ivan's rapacious followers, the oprichniki; Sinaisky takes it at a spacious but still exciting pace. The gentler but richly-hued aspects of Russian folklore in the tone-poem Legend, derived from Pushkin's Russlan i Lyudmila, Sinaisky captures with sparkle and energy, likewise the dancing, lyrical Sinfonietta on Russian Themes.” BBC Music Magazine, Proms 2007 *****

“Rimsky's vivid music gets a rare outing in this exhilarating programme. The familiar Capriccio espagnole is also splendidly presented: Sinaisky's performance is expansive, warmly relaxed… the closing Fandango produces a burst of exhilarating bravura.” Gramophone Magazine, August 2007
