Lazar Berman (piano)

Lazar Berman, a bear of a man whom The Times of London called ‘one of the last unabashed exponents of the Romantic tradition of Russian pianism’, was known for the power of his playing and for his prodigious technique, but was also capable of great delicacy at the keyboard. The core of his repertoire was the great Romantic and post-Romantic works, from Beethoven to Prokofiev and Shostakovich. Emil Gilels referred to him as a ‘phenomenon of the musical world’. Eloquence presents his complete Deutsche Grammophon recordings over five titles.

The Moments musicaux written in 1896, are products of Rachmaninov’s early maturity: at the ripe age of 23. The Corelli Variations, his last piano work, is considered, among Rachmaninov aficionados, to be one of his finest works. And while Berman recorded juts six of the Preludes (making one wish he’d recorded them all), they represent some of the finest recorded performances of these pieces. This reissue presents all of Berman’s Rachmaninov recordings for Deutsche Grammophon on a single album, with the first release on CD of the Moments musicaux.

“Berman's DG legacy from the mid-to-late '70s includes this superlative Rachmaninov selection, all played with lyricism and discerning panache.” BBC Music Magazine, Christmas 2014 *****

“a performance of the highest distinction ... [Berman] reacts vividly to every detail of this last of Rachmaninov’s works for solo piano” Gramophone Magazine (Corelli Variations)

“There is much beauty, too, in Berman’s account of the Preludes, sufficient to make one wish that he would record a complete set. How delicate and fugitive Op. 23 No. 1 sounds at first, for example; then it rises to a brief climax, exactly judged by the player, and fades away. Op. 23 No. 4 is another lyrical piece, here shaped by surpassing pianistic art. Hear, for instance, the balance of melody and counter-voice in the right hand, the projection of the music’s ebb and flow of emotion. Again, Op. 32 No. 12 is beautifully “orchestrated”, every feature, however small, being placed with exact regard to its importance.” Gramophone Magazine (Preludes)

“Berman’s performance is very welcome ... he meets the furioso of No. 4 with the right strength and passion. No. 5 is a beautiful dream while No. 6 is a stirring virtuoso tour de force” Gramophone Magazine (Moments musicaux)

Colin Horsley (piano)

“All these performances are graced with a fleet and unforced quality that tell a superior story to other more blistering and aggressive accounts. His pianistic ease and facility allow him many subtle and surprising inflections that quietly illuminate a whole Prelude.” Gramophone Magazine, April 2014

“Horsley was an excellent technician and had good instincts for the music. In the core repertoire, it was probably Rachmaninov with whom he was most linked.” MusicWeb International, 2nd October 2013

Richter only performed Rachmaninov’s first two concertos before embarking on his international career in 1960. This remastered Praga Digitals bi-channel hybrid SACD presents a logical compilation of two live performances plus four 'Preludes' which were to remain his favourites for the next 50 years.

When Sviatoslav Richter first got to know Rachmaninov’s piano concertos, the composer himself had been living in exile in the United States for 20 years. The young pianist was learning the Prokofiev and Rachmaninov major scores, having studied with Heinrich Neuhaus, and before his first travel to the West (1960). His first guest apperance in the free world, in Finland, was brought about by the mediation of Ekaterina Furtseva, a confidante of Nikolai Khrushchev, minister of culture for the few months preceding his Kremlin leadership. As encores we have four Rachmaninov 'Preludes', also recorded during his first tour of North America in 1960.

A unique programme which today’s cutting edge techniques have attempted to render in all their original glory. Praga Digitals celebrate their 20th anniversary in 2012.

Prelude Op. 23 No. 2 in B flat major

For modern audiences the name of Sergei Rachmaninov, who was born in 1873, conjures up great memorable tunes primarily from his second piano concerto (used in the film Brief Encounter) and second symphony; he was indeed the last flowering of Russian late Romanticism. For his contemporaries, however, he was one of the greatest pianists and who was an expert in expressing moods in the briefest time scale – he was a brilliant miniaturist. He wrote 17 Etudes-Tableaux and 26 Préludes, this collection provides all of the former and 5 of the latter including the one (in C# minor), written when was only 19, which became so popular that it haunted him as he was known to the general public by that piece alone. The Second Sonata is in one movement but three distinct sections, with the slower central movement providing some respite from the turbulence of the outer movements. The Variations on a theme of Corelli was Rachmaninov’s last work for solo piano and is based on the traditional tune La follia which Corelli used in his twelfth violin sonata. The Variations are skilfully wrought as they are in the Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini, the work that immediately followed it; the tune on which the Variations are made is the 24th Caprice for solo violin by the brilliant violinist-composer Paganini.
