VivaBiancaLuna Biffi

This unique and, in some respects, revolutionary programme offers a new approach to the Early Italian Renaissance frottola repertoire. First of all, the solo performance with voice and viola d’arco, that cantare alla viola (‘singing to the viol’) which Baldassare Castiglione, in his famous Book of the Courtier (1527), indicated as the ‘more welcome’ way of performing a sung text.

Secondly, the frottole have been selected and put in order forming a miniature opera with a Prologue, three acts, and Epilogue, shedding new light on the origins of opera. A charismatic figure, VivaBiancaLuna Biffi is engaged in an intense solo activity and is regular partner of some of the leading Early Music performers such as Jordi Savall, Pierre Hamon and Brigitte Lesne.

“On two counts...this recording offers something refreshingly unusual. At first hearing, the music may seem to lack variety; but repeated listening yields considerable subtlety and emotional range...Biffi's performances match the music in their directness and lightness of touch.” Gramophone Magazine, October 2014

This project is based on the premise that the 15th century related the blending of two cultural universes: the written one and the oral one. The boundary between the two contexts apparently was so thin that it allowed the two traditions to coexist within the same universe of communication: idioms, allegorical figures and quotations thus converged into the same cultural interpretation angle.

Christmas did not have the same importance in the official ecclesiastical calendar of the Catholic Church in previous centuries as it has today. This CD represents the characteristic of Spanish Christmas songs of the Renaissance, Polyphonic melodies known as “peasant songs” which were predominant in musical manuscripts of the period. Although many of the compositions are by the well known composer ‘Anon’, most were popular tunes of their day. Handel even used one of these carols, Quando nascette nino in the Messiah (1742) in the aria He shall feed his flock.

“Renaissance Spain's 'popular', non-liturgical celebration of Christmas was a distinctly jolly business, if this perky, toe-tapping CD is anything to go by. There is tenderness, too, amid the general buoyancy…” BBC Music Magazine, Christmas 2009 ****
