The music of Johann Strauss reflects an elegance and refinement typical of Vienna. It inspires us with a joie de vivre and an almost irresistible urge to dance. The ensemble Anima Eterna Brugge and its conductor, Jos van Immerseel, invite us to spend a delightful moment in Strauss’s company and theirs, with delicacy and feeling, conviction and emotion. Keeping as close as possible to the original score, they enable us to hear these pieces as they were intended by the composer. |

“Jansons may linger a little overmuch in Josef Strauss's Frauenherz (a tribute to the fact that the VPO now has female members?) but there is grace in his waltzes, fire in his marches and galops, and a welcome touch of humour in Eduard Strauss's Telephone Polka and the Bandits Galop. Altogether Jansons keeps the music bubbling along and the instrumental textures emerging with extreme clarity and refinement.” Gramophone Magazine, March 2006 | | | Usually despatched in 8 - 10 working days. |

"...direct performances that are an unaffected joy." (Gramophone) “Most of us have got used to period instruments playing Beethoven but 'early music' groups tackling later repertoire still raise eyebrows. Similarly, the suggestion that there is a good composer named Strauss whose first name is not Richard usually invokes derision. Both of these sniffy attitudes are bravely challenged by Jos van Immerseel, who penitently writes that 'like many musicians I found Strauss's music a bit cheap. This wasn't the case when I began studying music as a 10-year-old and sightread Strauss waltzes… I liked the music, but the pleasure was short-lived. In the music school where I next studied, it was forbidden to play music by Strauss (or to enjoy anything); Bach and Czerny replaced Strauss on the music desk. The prejudice against Strauss's “unworthy” music made it impossible for me to appreciate even his orchestral scores.' Aided by a new critical edition published by Bärenreiter, Immerseel's vibrant and ostentatious revisionist approach allows no wilting pretentiousness, but instead the superb Anima Eterna use their period instruments to deliver full-on, gutsy, direct performances that are an unaffected joy.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 | |
