Song of the Rhineland

Salome Kammer (voice) & Rudi Spring (piano)

Composers Kurt Weill and Hanns Eisler had great success with their songs, creating an unmistakable style that has remained unique with its mixture of popular music, supreme musical sophistication and political claims. Salome Kammer is a versatile artists and an ideal advocate of this music.

“There's some historical logic in yoking Kurt Weill and Hanns Eisler together – both were active in Berlin from the late 1920s, until forced to leave by the Nazis, and both worked with Bertolt Brecht – but musically they were very different...Kammer is adroit at bridging both musical worlds; she's a superb singing actress, with the required range and technique.” The Guardian, 31st January 2013

plus poems by Langston Hughes

Darryl Taylor (tenor), Maria Corley (piano), William Warfield (narrator)

The composer Elie Siegmeister once declared of Langston Hughes (1902-1967) that he was the “most musical poet of the twentieth century”. True or false, this judgement underscores the unquestionable fact that much of Hughes’s poetry lends itself fairly readily to musical setting, and that, for Hughes, music was perhaps a principal inspiration behind his writing. From popular forms to the more demanding jazz and classical repertoire, Langston Hughes found inspiration in the work of musicians. He adored music and took pride in the fascination that his poems and plays inspired in composers and performers.

This collection of songs written by 20th Century American composers on the poet's texts celebrates the centenary of his birth.

“This collection is a gem! Langston Hughes was a very "musical" poet who was inspired by a variety of forms, from jazz to classical. His poetry in turn inspired a whole generation of composers, thirteen of whom are represented here in fifteen art songs. Additionally, eight Hughes poems are read by William Warfield.” creativefolk.com
