Between 1976 and 1978, Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra made recordings of the complete Schubert symphonies for Decca, as well as some of the incidental music for Rosamunde. Other than the Schumann symphonies, it was the only symphony cycle this tremendous Decca artist made for the label. The recordings were all made in the Mann Auditorium and were all produced by Ray Minshull, who, together with John Culshaw and Christopher Raeburn, worked extensively with Mehta during his exclusive Decca years. 29 April 2011 marks the 75th birthday of Zubin Mehta and this cycle is being issued as a homage to this great musician in his birthday year. Volume 1 contains the first four symphonies as well as the mighty Eighth, the ‘Unfinished’. “The weighty approach works most convincingly in the Tragic Symphony.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2011 *** “vital, well-styled” Gramophone Magazine (Symphonies Nos. 1 & 2) “Mehta secures neat, articulate, musically fluent performances from his Israeli orchestra and the Decca engineers reproduce them with admirable lucidity and absence of fuss” Gramophone Magazine (Symphonies Nos. 4 & 8) “Mehta directs a performance well inside the Viennese tradition … crisply pointed readings admirably suited to these youthful inspirations.” Gramophone Magazine (Symphony No. 3) | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Schubert: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 2
After their acclaimed recording of the complete Beethoven symphonies in a new musical guise, a highly-regarded cycle of Richard Strauss's tone poems, the complete Mahler symphonies and a number of other musical projects with which they attracted widespread attention, David Zinman and the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich now devote themselves to the symphonies of Franz Schubert. “a vivid and vivacious performance. Zinman and his modern-instrument Zurich players have adopted some of the practices of the early-music brigade (the woodwinds embellish their melodic phrases), and the result is the best of both worlds.” Sunday Times, 25th March 2012 “as a total performance...there's nothing to question, instead appreciating the woodwind decorating their parts in the slow movement, and revelling in the Zurich Tonhalle's expertise. But here's the rub: they play like a conductorless band because Zinman is dispassionate, reluctant to fathom the emotional horizons of each work.” Gramophone Magazine, July 2012 “Zinman's grasp of this music is, to my mind, totally convincing; his profound understanding of the importance of pulse in Schubert adds considerably to our appreciation of the young composer's achievement...The sense of flow, the inner rhythmic and - notably - melodic life over quite long paragraphs in early Schubert is here wonderfully conveyed in performances of notable musical profundity...The playing of the Zurich Tonhalle is truly excellent throughout.” International Record Review, June 2012 “Whereas others invariably project easy charm and elegance, Zinman finds deeper, more unsettling resonances in both works...By encouraging the strings of the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra to use vibrato extremely sparingly, Zinman creates an ideal transparency in Schubert's scoring, thus allowing much of the delightful filigree woodwind passagework to come to the fore.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2012 **** | | | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. |

| | | Schubert: Symphonies Nos. 1, 3 & 8
“From the very first bars (complete with thrilling stratospheric trumpet) the First Symphony emerges as a work of phenomenal vitality and daring. The rhythms are taut and muscular, the melodies phrased with obvious affection, with no dramatic punches pulled.” BBC Music Magazine, January 2006 **** | | | (also available to download from $11.00) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. With his works by single composer, Lorin Maazel made history as Chief Conductor of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. After the successful release of the album containing the complete symphonic works of Anton Bruckner, the BR-KLASSIK label now presents the complete symphonies of Franz Schubert, recorded in 2001. The present Chief Conductor of the Munich Philharmonic had already conducted Schubert’s “Unfinished Symphony” at the age of eight. The second album featuring the long-standing Chief Conductor of the BR Symphonieorchester. Live recordings from Munich’s Prinzregententheater made in March 2001. First release at an attractive midprice. “These interpretations are by and large more tense and taut than the genial, relaxed manner typified by many previous, celebrated interpreters...Maazel’s treatment of the Fourth is urgent and vital...The performance of D.759 is graced by gorgeous instrumental tone in every department.” MusicWeb International, 24th May 2013 |
